This housing was build in 1965’s and the project is to change the volume in order to transform this house. The roof was demolited and we add a new box, with a thermic space, in order to keep the solar energy. The choice to keep the floor is to conserve the stone construction.

Alluminio Store - COOLSTOODIO ASSOCIATI

Sinestesie barocche - COOLSTOODIO ASSOCIATI, Luca Missio

Allestimento scenografico.

Austrian Pavilion EXPO 2015 - Paolo Venturella

The main concept of the pavillion is to create two different spaces. One for the exhibition and another one for a big greenhouse. They are connected to allow people to walk in a unique single space. The greenhouse is the place where people can pick up and eat food directly from the hortus. From an aesthetic point of view is used the typical shape of the austrian wood house and of the greenhouse. The hortus is placed on the south side facing the sun. It is connected with the bar and restaurant in order to creating a place where people can easily eat the vegetables picked up by themselves. The exhibition space is placed on the north side to avoid direct sunlight. Moreover this part of the pavillion is lifted up to allow the pedestrian flow on the area. The two spaces are similar in shape but totally different in their function. One is made in glass, lightened with natural light of the sun, and the other is covered with stoff material for a darker space where is possible to show panels of the exhibition and places for offices. The two spaces are linked one to another with a facade that fade from dark to bright. The shape of the classic tilted roof house recall the typical mountain austrian house and at the same time the greenhouse creating a very recognizable and iconic design. The path inside the pavillion is made in a way that people walk in a kind of loop, passing from the exhibition space to the greenhouse and from the greenhouse to the exhibition again. In the pavillion the user feel very interactive since he is picking up food directly and eating in the same place. This fact shows the clear sustainable message of the self made food, genuine and controlled. The simple idea is to have a very iconic volume that symbolises Austria that works either for interactive and for educational purposes. The “Rampant house” clearly show the message of how an architecture can really be sustainable, a space where food is self made, where natural light is controlled and where a dark and multimedia space is merged with social and open space for all the user.

Europan 12 | Seraing - Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi

Seraing came, like many villages and towns in this region, to grow with the introduction of the mining industry. Factories were built and needed workers. These workers lived in houses in the close vicinity of the factories. It created a durable relationship in the urban fabric: the factories needed the workers, i.e. the houses, and the workers needed the factories. Today the factories and workshops, and thus the employment, are leaving or have already left. This not only leaves an empty space in the urban tissue, but also an empty space in the economic life of the citizens of Seraing. The central question of this project is therefore: How can we re-introduce this durable relationship between these to types of zones? In order to answer this question the urban design consists of two main layers. The first layer embeds the design within the site; the second creates the functional relationships

Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi — Europan 12 | Seraing

The main part of the first layer is the green park. It is located all around the red boundary. The concept of the park refers to the typical belgian house. They have, infact, a close curtain overlooking the street and a wide open garden in the backyard. the park has the same logic. It is close along the street forming a filter plant to reduce the impact of noise and pollution and it has a big green heart inside. the vegetation is divided into three diffetent cathegories according to the position in wich they are. On the northen part of the red boundary there is an area for PHYTOREMEDIATION. The type of PHYTOREMEDIATION we have chosen is the Medium Rotation Forest; it’s a five years circle in wich vegetation grows up and than the cut wood is used to produce energy and the soil can be occupated by other crops or buildings. This strategy allows to change the use of the land and admitts different developments phases inside the same piece of land. Near the river’s banks there is an area of agroenergy and two watlands that has also the use of basins of millwork just in case of an overflowing of the river that crosses the project area. The remainder part of the green park is dedicated to flowery meadow and bicycle paths so people can use it as they want.

Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi — Europan 12 | Seraing

The project location is nowadays at first sight characterized by its difference in heights, its wooded appearance and mostly by its isolated character. On the one hand its natural environment – including a lot of trees – makes it almost inaccessible and, on the other hand, the wall on the side of the Rue de l’Hôpital blocks any relationship with the project location. But there is more than meets the eye! Today there are two tunnelled rivers flowing in the site area. At the same time there are many mineshafts that have been filled spread all over the site. The concept is to bring back the two rivers and use them as leading elements for not only the project location but also the main master plan. The areas on the North and South side of the rivers will be built. In between, a central park connects the project location with the green boulevard. The filled mining shafts, each surrounded by a 25-meter non-building radius, intersect the built areas. They are used to open up the project to the surrounding neighbourhoods. Instead of leaving these circles as open voids, the project introduces << totems >>. These are lightweight art interventions, which serve as both visual reference points and more intimate public spaces. Depending on the use of cars they can also be used as temporary parking. Preferably local artists do the design with materials from the old factories.

Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi — Europan 12 | Seraing

Instead of looking for contrasts between the new project and its surroundings, the project proposes an architecture that is derived from the streets of Seraing and its region. The buildings use a line typology and are positioned next to a pedestrian ‘street’. Every ‘line’ element consists of different types of standardized houses and apartments, which together form a whole, while being at the same time very different. In this way one can get the same variation in façades and roofs, all together with the same cost reduction of making a standard apartment building. They are orientated northwest – southeast to assure that every house has an outside space towards the southwest. To let every house and every part of the house receive the sunshine, all the rooms are opened to the south- west façade while the functional, less-inhabited spaces (stairs, bathrooms,…) are located in the north-east part. The different types of housing are all based on the superposition of boxes of 6×6 x 3 meters. On the edges of every building zone is a continuing plinth that holds generic spaces. These are multifunctional, common spaces. It is important to know thatthis plinth is useable for all inhabitants in Seraing – so not only for the new living area -, which they can rent for their own use. If there are a lot of families they will benefit from a kindergarten, while a gym or a swimming pool is suited for people who like sports.

Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi — Europan 12 | Seraing

All the buildings are constructed with wood as main material. This uses less energy to manufacture and is less polluting in the building and eventually the demolishing process. The main structure is built up out of cross laminated timber. This is a prefab wood material and therefore quicker, thus cheaper, to build while its resistance to fire is still good. The isolation consists of wood fibre. The mining shafts have been filled, but the underground structures are still present. The proposal is to investigate if they can be used as an underground thermal energy storage. If possible, they help in a very efficient mannner the heating and cooling of all the buildings in the new site.

Giorgia Borrelli, Adriana Raguso, Alejandro Chichizola Olivieri, Giulia Larizza, Giulia Ventre, Luis Cifo , Matthijs Stoffels, ROBERTA GAGLIARDI, sonia sticchi — Europan 12 | Seraing

Factories are for a long time not any more the main reason of existence of Seraing, but the urban tissue is still made for the ‘man who works at the factory’ with its mono-variety housing. The design proposal shows an urban design that offers housing for multiple sorts of households and multifunctional spaces free to rent to the inhabitants. The proposal does not try to impose a design language that stands apart from the city of Seraing, but instead integrates and mingles with the existing tissue and history. By bringing back the two closed down rivers and integrating the old mining shafts as visual and energetic references, the project settles itself and gives visual leads for the development of the entire site. The housing form with its distinct roof shapes is a direct reference to the existing houses in the centre of Seraing. All in all, the design proposal gives the existing houses and its inhabitants a lot of common spaces and a qualitative park, while the existing tissue gives the design proposal its distinctive shape and services. This just could be a durable relationship, wouldn’t you say?

Europan 12 | Marseille Plan d'Aou - bam!

0
0

bam! — Europan 12 | Marseille Plan d'Aou

In a context strongly characterized by gated communities, as Plan d’Aou is, the progject aims to foster social, ethnic and generational diversity. The project propose a place that can stimulate the collective living, achieved through the organization of spaces for sharing and participating, and a good program variety. Quoting D.F. Wallace, the name of the project reflects this purpose.

bam! — Europan 12 | Marseille Plan d'Aou

The result is a human-scale built space, where daytime activities are mixed with nightly activities, as well as for the young with the elderly ones, and those temporary to the permanent ones. A fruitful interplay of opposites which helps to strengthen the sense of security of those who live in the neighborhood. The innovative aspect of the program stands in the variety defined “from below”, through a participatory planning in phases, that leads to the definition of the project and its construction, allowing a slow and gradual approach of the citizens to the issues of the redevelopment of Plan d’Aou. It is it about planning the emotional and physical reunification to those places.

Una gelateria a "blocchetti" - Daniele Menichini

0
0

Daniele Menichini — Una gelateria a "blocchetti"

AVANT PROPOS– Europan 12 announces a shift in paradigm. It is a fact that the World is constantly changing socially, politically, environmentally, economically and technologically. However, are our cities responsive to such conditions? We believe that cities nowadays are too rigid and static, and are incapable of adapting to constantly shifting conditions and needs. “On the move” provides a critique of the contemporary top-down urban planning approach and the relationship between city and user. Through rethinking and reimaging the urban development process, we provide a framework and toolkit that empowers the people the ability and opportunity to contribute to the planning and development process of cities. The toolkit consists of 3 major tools – The Cloud, The Rules and The Prototypologies. – Through this set of tools, people are now able to participate in the design process, allowing them to make decisions on how their city is designed, how their city grows, and most importantly, how their city is used. While the result might end up in an apparent chaos, it would in fact be nothing but one form of organization framed within the unexpectedness and dynamism given by free will and freedom of choice. The reconceptualised city is designed here collectively, and is highly flexible and responsive to shifting conditions, while celebrating the intense, diverse and complex character of a metropolis. Welcome to YOUR city.

Concept: Urban-Social structure

THE CITY: FROM STATIC TO DYNAMIC– Cities nowadays are designed in a top-down approach, with the Governmental institutions dictating design decisions, hence are often not what the people want or need. Cities are now rigid and static, and are not able to ADAPT to the constantly changing demands and needs of the people. We believe cities should have a dynamic relationship with the people who live there. The city should be designed by a bottom-up approach, giving citizens the tools and parameters within which their city can be designed. The city should be constantly evolving and responding to emerging needs and desires. The city and the people should have a reciprocal relationship. THE TOOLS– In order to create such a dynamic system, we provide the people with a “make your own” planning Toolkit with the necessary urbanistic development instruments. Within the toolkit, there is the Cloud, the Prototypologies and the Rules. The 3 tools work together to create a city that allows freedom through a process of controlled chaos.

The Cloud

1.- The CLOUD is a critique of the rigid zoning method of contemporary urban planning and is the generator of this dynamic city. The cloud extracts data such as attractions and pedestrian flows from the surrounding context, and generates a 3D map of points that highlight the contexts’ influences. According to these “attractors”, the mapping of points suggest where different scales or typologies could be built to maximize interaction and integration. The Cloud itself is an evolving master plan, and it constantly updates when new projects and flows are introduced.

The Rules

2.- The RULES indicate and regulate how the user builds in the site. The set of rules ensures the livelihood of the city and its users in terms of social and environmental aspects. Upon the input of every new idea or project within the cloud, a designer will take part throughout a conversational process of consulting. The designer may also be a commission, which will make sure that the overall rules (subject to change according to yearly surveys) are followed throughout the project. They are the guideline for an active co-habitation which again reacts on the needs of the people perpetuating the process whilst ensuring a dynamic growth.

The Prototypologies

3.- The PROTOTYPOLOGIES are model types that are constantly evolving. As prototypes, they represent a process of evolution, inherently incorporating transformation and evolution as a response to the information they receive from their surrounding context and to the variable necessities of their users. As typologies, they represent structures which are commonly used and understood within our societies. The catalogue shows the potential scenarios of how a prototypology may evolve over time, either in scale or function. The prototypologies do not suggest a shape or form; instead, what is emphasized is their performance – highly flexible and capable of being reused for new functions.

The Railway Boulevard + Vllas

COLONIZATION: 2013-2040 - The virtual cloud is in essence a generic analysis for any specific site. It is therefore designed to be a basic tool for urban planning. In the Saint-Sever area, the actual station and the archive tower are the main XL attractors. According to the rules previously presented (the script of the cloud), strong attractors bring in high density, therefore a high-rise centre emerges between both. Re-using the fret station and turning it into the new Saint-Sever main train station with a new entrance hall is one of the main issues to solve. Around it, new functions will appear re-using the existing warehouse, creating new sidewalks and intense pedestrian activities and flows. The docks in front of the Seine reconfigure the existing hangars again into a new cultural area incorporating theatres, museums and exhibition centres, a space very much open to the public with tertiary amenities and a strong connection with the landscape. A newly created pedestrian and bike bridge crosses the whole site to link the university campus and the city centre through the island, with the station and the south of Rouen. This new flow brings a new dynamic densifiable influence (cf CLoud) in the island allowing the development of new prototypologies around it. Small interventions emerge on top and plugged on the facades of the existing housing towers by means of extending the limbs of the living space creating new terraced facades and green roofs.

COLONIZATION: 2013-2040

ADAPTABILITY: 2040 - New typologies, density and activities have colonized the area and with them opportunities arouse. The Saint Sever Station has turned into the main multimodal node for Rouen connecting the city with the south of France and with it’s own historic centre. The roof of the station has allowed plugged-in typologies and adapted its quality for new functions. Upon the existing warehouses and the long park, the city has been developed spontaneously in stripes creating lineal urban paths which follow the directionality of the existing tissue. In the core of the island the crossing node located between the new pedestrian path and the longitudinal street has attracted numerous activities and turned into a vertical mixed use compact zone, a new icon and a visible skyline for Rouen. Many typologies host new functions 30 years after. People have claimed for more sport facilities in the back side of the site where the landscape opens up, more cultural equipment on the docks and housing demand rises all around. The almost fulfilled total area of the cloud indicates a new conception of the vertical-city based upon reconquering the neglected real estate (roofs, tracks…) and amplifying the possibilities of the new. The process has flexibilized the rigid urban structures and allowed the “Rouennais” to actively collaborate in building their own city.

Maso Curio - Roberto Paoli

Roberto Paoli — Maso Curio

Roberto Paoli — Maso Curio

Roberto Paoli — Maso Curio
