TREEHOUSE (Casa sull'albero) - AL_STUDIO

0

Casa CRZ - Giorgio Melesi

Venice Cityvision - Julien Pasteau, Benjamin Haziot

Venice is unreal, it’s an island off the world detached from the reality of men. The tourist doesn’t visit Venice, he visits a postcard, a frozen city he fantasizes. For him, the city is a sequence of images he has built, an imaginary shared by all. For the tourist, the Venetian is the pizza cook, the tourist guide, the gift shop salesman.

S8u4e3_01-1024x724_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

Venice is also a theater, the setting of plots, dramas and mysteries. It’s as if it had been built for the needs of a movie, like an Italian Hollywood at the scale of a city. But this scenery became meretricious, copied and recopied by amusement parks, it no longer has the value it used to have. Like every scenery, it is not permanent.

S8u4e3_02-1024x724_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

By dint of not existing, Venice will sink. It inevitably drowns in the waves like the figure of a tragedy whose fate is. The same way that its reality has finally disappeared in people’s mind, the city will disappear in the lagoon as she never existed. She will become a new Atlantis, relegated to an imaginary city.

Fonctionnement_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

The lift is the machinery that will save Venice !

Villeretournée_copie3_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

Just like a stage set, Venice needs a machinery to operate. This mechanism is the technical and pragmatical solution brought to an unreal and dreamlike city. Only the intervention of modernity can anchor Venice in it’s reality.

Villeretournée2_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

The lift consider the city as a single element by supporting it entirely with a superstructure, a kind of mobile platform. Like mooring pole, giant needles are planted through Venice into the ground. The superstructure goes up along these needles, saving the city from a certain death. The needles are fed by the energy of water, wind and sun making the system autonomous

Axono_détailbien_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

Venice may then be recreated symmetrically under the old city, underwater. A modern replica filled with tourism facilities her ancestor couldn’t bear anymore. The old city is washed from the tourist’s fantasies. It becomes again an inhabited city and not the visited city it was. The new city can grow indefinitely underwater, it can evolve without the old city knowing it

Fataxo2_large

Benjamin Haziot Julien Pasteau

Underwater, it’s the fantasy and the dream. Over water it’s the reality and the rationality.

Villa Barberina - Paolo Bornello

Daegu Gosan Public Library - Antonino Davide Siragusa, Marco Trovato, Luigi Failla, Pierluigi Turco, Alessio Calamia, Francesco Paolo Testagrossa

Introduction The project of the Public Library of Daegu starts with the synthesis of two important principles: create a “Urban Square”, a continuation of the outside green space and create a “Urban Dynamic Learning Center.” The square is from immemorial time the heart of the historical city: a place that citizens have chosen for their leisure and encounters, for trade and exchanges. Today, such social gathering places are progressively disappearing, replaced by centers for business and entertainment to which, in various ways, are increasingly delegated for the management and planning of the inhabitants leisure time. On the other hand, there is also a greater demand for places where people can cultivate various interests and have opportunities to meet and exchange with others. In The Great, Good Place, the American sociologist Ray Oldenburg, argues the importance of these places that he calls “Third Places” in the development of a community. These are a safe and informal, neutral ground, where people feel at ease and have the opportunity to relax, meet and socialize.

Architectural Planning The building’s shape is due to the necessity of an anthropic space: a deformation of the facade generates the entrance, a more simple deformation allows, on the rear side, to see the interior life into the library. A plastics modelling of the roof allows the building to comply with the height limits required by the brief and to create a green garden in the roof. Flexibility The building is characterized by great flexibility. People can use some parts independently, at different times or in different ways from the rest of the library. Every decision related to the organisations of the areas of the building is made to allow multiple uses today and new configurations in a future redesign.

Concept_large

Transparency The building is conceived as an open space: the ground floor of the Library, the newspapers and news area, is completely transparent, offering passers-by the chance to see the people, the life and activities taking place within it, pointing out that the Library is a fragment of the city. At the same time, transparency allows users to maintain eye contact with the outside world, a prerequisite for the welfare of the people. On the upper floors the building is wrapped in a simple and effective system of shading, which modulate the light inward. The slope and the distance between the slats allow the building to change its look: during the day it looks like a compact block allowing users to see the outside, at night, the interior lighting, allows to perceive the interior, making the building become a city landmark. The control of the lighting also allows to give an elegant texture on the façade of the building. The library presents itself as an open space at different heights that overlook a common courtyard: the Urban Square. The level of the entrance has been raised respect to the plane of the site for both technical issues and to impart a greater aspect to the building. The entire area offers many opportunities for relax, meeting and conviviality

Esterno32_large

Internal distribution From the entrance you can reach the inner courtyard, the center of the library, or the Multipurpose room and the Culture Classroom, which are both accessible at different times from the rest of the building. The center of the courtyard is a grand open fluid space. It resembles a covered square, a new living room for Daegu City. The ground floor is an open space with an area for news, newspapers and magazines; an area for lounge; an area for new arrivals and reference services (Library Guide, Information Search, Book Search, Book Checkout, Return Room, Lounge and a portion of Stockroom). Easily visible is the information desk / loan / manual return, the info point, the self-check, on-line catalogs. Totems and television screens will give information about the city and the territory of Daegu.

1_large

For its composition, the project borrows the typical architectural elements of the historic villa such as the greenhouses and the stables, to create psychologically different spaces representative of the identity of the company that will use them for a restaurant, reception space and conference room

Casa delle Rose - Paolo Bornello

0

Altagamma - Italian Contemporary Excellence Exhibition - Migliore+Servetto Architects

0
0

A landscape of images marked by an evocative path, in the middle of lights and reflections, has been created by Ico Migliore and Mara Servetto for the exhibition “Altagamma – Italian Contemporary Excellence” at the Milan Triennale.

Altagamma_triennale_02_large

A completely white space lit by 65 cases hanging on long and red exposed wiring cables, to host and give light to the selected shots.

Altagamma_triennale_08_large

The cases have been designed, in their shape and disposition, as a sort of tridimensional layout within a big white page, to define an overall scenario about the Italian manufacture and industrial excellence.

Altagamma_triennale_09_large

The mirror insertions create free and surreal links between images and the volumes of the cases creating several visual connections and reflections, where lightness becomes a dominant element. In its rhythmic sequence, the path builds up as a free and changing flow of each visitor.

Altagamma_triennale_11_large

At the entrance a long lit corridor guides the visitors in a “trip throughout Italy”: a continuous surface of light forms the background of a black & white graphics about made in Italy, while on the opposite side 10 monitors talks about the philosophy of the brands through images and texts.

Altagamma_triennale_04_large

At the end of the tunnel, as a premise to the landscape of images, a great projection floor shows the experience of the young reports that were asked to interpret the Italian brands of the exhibition.

Garden Museum - Dow Jones Architects

0
0

In October 2007 we won an architectural competition to redesign the Garden Museum. The competition brief asked for a new gallery space where temporary exhibitions could be housed in secure and environmentally-controlled conditions.

Dow_jones_mgh_5x4_©david-grandorge_04_large

It appeared to us that creating a dedicated place for the museum’s permanent collection was equally important, as the exhibits were frequently moved to make space for events. We developed a strategy which addressed both issues.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_03_large

Our idea was to create a belvedere within the existing building. This houses the new galleries and provides a raised ground from which a new perspective of the existing building is attained.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_11_large

The belvedere structure enables us to place the temporary gallery at ground floor level and move the permanent collection, from its former location in the nave, up to the new first floor level.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_14_large

This new arrangement also empties the nave of exhibits so that the museum’s diverse cultural programme of lectures, debates and seminars can take place alongside the exhibitions.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_16_large

The belvedere is an entirely free-standing structure that only touches the floor of the existing grade II* listed building and is entirely reversible. The project received whole hearted support from Lambeth planners and English Heritage, who have used the project as an example of how contemporary architecture can successfully meld with historically sensitive buildings.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_20_large

The belvedere is made from Eurban, a pre-fabricated engineered timber material. We used this material as it is light weight and very strong, and allowed us to realise the building forms we required. Being pre-fabricated and made of large panels it is also very quick to build with. The museum was closed for only 12 weeks whilst the work took place, and of this time the structure took three weeks to assemble. The timber structure is also very environmentally friendly.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_22_large

The timber walls are left unfinished so that they recede into the background with the limestone of the church walls and columns, leaving the foreground for the exhibits and the life of the museum.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_24_large

The windows and doors are strongly coloured and protrude through the raw timber walls. The furniture and signage is also strongly coloured and is read as a further layer of detail added to the mute timber form.

Dow_jones_mgh_©david-grandorge_28_large

We also designed the re-hang of the permanent collection. This involved the spatial organization of the exhibition and the design of the cabinets.
From competition win to completion on site was thirteen months. The contract period was twelve weeks. The project cost £300,000.
