The topographic house - Akasaka Shinichiro Atelier

This small house is built in the developing residential area of Sapporo, the north of Japan. A promenade along the small waterway is located in the south of the planned site. The site’s level rises about 1,200 mm from the promenade. Beyond the waterway, a well maintained park with a hill can be seen, and also Mt. Teine is in a view further beyond. By extending the surrounding topography and height differences into the interior, We expected an “interior with organic relationship” to be created, which has various patterns of connection between outside and inside, and the distance between the family members. The differences in altitude of the floors cause the actions of the family members within to vary.

GROUND FLOOR IN SARRIA - Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados

0
0

The ground floor is located in the neighborhood of Sarrià, in Barcelona, in a building between party walls from the beginnings of the century. There is a courtyard inside the south-west facing block. It was in a very precarious condition with a lot of dampness, a poor state of sanitation and termites in the wooden beams.

Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados — GROUND FLOOR IN SARRIA

The renovation aims to improve a clearly deficient and unbalanced distribution, in addition to improving its condition of comfort, as much thermal as of the distribution of natural light. Part of the perimeter has been dry lined and ventilated, and a piece of sanitary wrought iron covers the entire surface.

Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados — GROUND FLOOR IN SARRIA

The new interior layout places the common spaces near the courtyard, opening itself up to its entire width while searching for a relationship with the exterior. There is, to one side of the dwelling, a series of items of furniture, where the kitchen can also be found.

Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados — GROUND FLOOR IN SARRIA

The rehabilitation is respectful of the value of the building, its memory and the traces of its past. The main room is a box introduced into the renovated space formed by doors recovered from the dwelling.

Isabel López Vilalta + Asociados — GROUND FLOOR IN SARRIA

All the materials used are simple, without pretension and treated with their natural appearance. Three types of finish have been used: a shiny one in closets and kitchen, a matte one on the floor and the other is warm from re-used wood.

The dwelling has been treated like a machine by the installation of a home automation system that controls energy expenditure. Whether the blinds are open or closed depends on solar incidence, which generates cross-ventilation when there is an increase of temperature. Underfloor heating, powered by an aero-thermic machine, controls the temperature. The integration of the electric and audiovisual installation takes advantage of the home automation system.

The 3 roof shells of the Grand Theatre span a force line to the 3 towers. The common architectural language of all building parts give the identity to the site and the whole New West Jinan area. The building has a highly memorisable icon effect. Public life will be concentrated in the centre of the complex so that cultural exchange can happen.

Food Park - studio elementare _ Paolo Pasquini Architetti, Cinzia Catena

studio elementare _ Paolo Pasquini Architetti, Cinzia Catena — Food Park

studio elementare _ Paolo Pasquini Architetti, Cinzia Catena — Food Park

studio elementare _ Paolo Pasquini Architetti, Cinzia Catena — Food Park

studio elementare _ Paolo Pasquini Architetti, Cinzia Catena — Food Park

The project focuses on an area in the middle of the former area of the Carlo Erba plant, wich is currently being developed and upgraded. The project area is central both from a physical and strategic point of view. The longer side of the elongated rectangle of land is located alongside the new public street that is part of the project. The goal, in terms of town planning, has from the start been create a synergy between the elements: vehicle traffic on the one side, and a green strip where pleasant pedestrian paths and pavillions for cafes catering to the offices in the neighborhood may be designed. We have sought to guarantee, on the one side, the visibility of the pavilion from Via Imbonati, as requested by the eventual operator, and on the other the comunity of the pedestrian routes that, starting from the corner between Via Imbonati and Via Bracco, crosses the area diagonally, passing by the office complex, the Food park and the new public street, arriving at the public park and the adjacent Theater and Museum of Marionettes and puppets. There are two pavilions, a smaller one which overlooks Via Imbonati and may be reached directly from this street, which will house a pizzeria and bar, and another central one which will feature a restaurant. The two pavilions are conected, both by a basement containing systems and facilities, and a shelter which continues to the west of the restaurant pavilion, connecting it to Via Crespi. The project area is the only part of the renovation of the former Carlo Erba plant where there will be no underground parking areas. This allows us to envisage a true “urban forest” on the elongated rectangle comprising the project. Our idea of equipped green area is based on the logic of natural environments, or a desire to recreate the landscape which may, incredible as it may seem, have been here before the Carlo Erba plant, and before the farmlands that preceded it; a true forest as found in the Lombard flatlands.

Metamor Architetti Associati, Laura Colonna — casa CM

Metamor Architetti Associati, Laura Colonna — casa CM

TWINPHENOMENA - arenas basabe palacios

Under the slogan “Adaptable City” an urban plan extended in time was sought, sustainable and dense, that wouldn’t come into conflict nor with the small scale of the existing buildings, nor with the surrounding agricultural land. TWINPHENOMENA proposes to generate new settlements in Höganäs thanks to the reconciliation between URBAN and RURAL.

arenas basabe palacios — TWINPHENOMENA

Urban supports and Allemende generate the landscape of future Höganäs

The project colonizes the territory through a strategy of densification over time and, at the same time, integrates the agricultural landscape in the voids of the residential fabric, minimizing paved areas to guarantee a low-footprint urban development. In order to achieve these goals, we propose a network of public spaces that manage their own buildability and a grid of productive gardens to exploit the agricultural landscape. We define the rules that ensure its proper functioning (maximum buildability, relation between different scales of investment, maximum land occupancy, etc.) and guides for its subsequent management (centralization of ground floors, buildability exchange, community participation, etc.)

arenas basabe palacios — TWINPHENOMENA

Plan of the clustering organization of TWINPHENOMENA

A dual linear narrative (urban vector/rural vector) deals with concepts of sustainability, identity or participation as well as qualities of diversity, porosity and hybridization. These principles organize the future growth of Höganäs, promoting through the whole process the intervention of all actors implicated in building the city. Multiple platforms will be set up to manage and exploit the new district’s common landscape and recources.

arenas basabe palacios — TWINPHENOMENA

Storyboard of structuring duality by Urban and Rural vectors

Through this strategy, every concept of the intervention is transformed and developed towards the reconciliation between urbanity and agriculture.

Every concept is transformed by both coexisting realities

MR house - MAPA

The commission consisted of the construction of a shelter for a family that will house two large areas. In the first, the space around the fire and the kitchen to be constituted as a module without divisions, with the fireplace, wood stove and a play room. And in the second, a module for the bedrooms and bathrooms. From the commission, the project proposed the following set of rules:
Site
The project is located in the forests of the Andes, in a place called “El Buchen”, in the region of Maule, Chile. It is a place of ancient trees and difficult access.
The project is located in a forest clearing in order to avoid interfering with existing trees, an element that defines the length, width and height of the volume.

MAPA — MR house

Habitability
From the commission of building a shed arises the problem of how to inhabit it, understanding that it is a single undivided space. We propose the construction of spaces differentiated by lower volumes containing the various program requirements, which in turn are able to differentiate the temperatures necessary to inhabit them, obtaining different areas that are climatically controlled.

MAPA — MR house

This led to three types of spaces
_Vestibule space, mediating between interior / exterior. It can be used as a terrace in the summer, opening its doors and allowing cross ventilation. It can also be used as a hall in winter, behaving as the first barrier of climate control.
_Common area, living / dining / kitchen, which takes advantage of the full height of the building, establishing itself as a mid temperature space.

_Private space, bedrooms and bathrooms. With low ceilings and openings controlled by their orientation, in order to achieve thermal comfort.

MAPA — MR house

Form / Sheds
The study of forms arose from the observation of wood sheds in the area, which yielded as a result the following set of rules: The idea of working with closed volumes, without eaves and with controlled openings, wherein the roof is constructed first to protect from the weather, and then the interiors are built. One form within another. As a result of building the roof as the first action, the idea arose of organizing the program through smaller volumes within the overall volume. For this, we chose to build two smaller sheds inside the larger one, which grouped the bedrooms on one hand and the bathrooms on the other. These differ in color and materiality from the rest of the construction.

URBAN SOFTWARE - arenas basabe palacios

0
0

International competition Europan 12 Austria was seeking a solution to the complex suburban “Siemensäcker” area, in the outskirts of Vienna. The team found 3 SITUATIONS, very different to each other, that required an unconventional approach: an urban void prepared to be occupied by a new residential development; a tertiary fabric waiting to be completed with new buildings; and a old factory in search of a new use as an equipment for the future neighbourhood. Arenas Basabe Palacios architects consider that there are three processes that generate a city in a consecutive and simultaneous way. The planning sets the basis for its production, and finally an appropriate management is essential for the urban environment proper functioning. They believe that one has to take into account all these three processes in order to generate a holistic approach to urban production.

arenas basabe palacios — URBAN SOFTWARE

A matrix crossing 3 tools to 3 situations is set up

URBAN SOFTWARE proposes 3 TOOLS to solve the different existing situations, and to promote a wide negotiation field for all actors in every step of the project. This set of tools will respect the identitary character of each area of intervention:
  1. The design of flexible SUPPORTS, which define a frame for the development of urban processes, ensuring a controlled built surrounding as well as allowing some degrees of freedom and diversity.
  2. A SYNTAX for the description of the urban fabric production without defining its result. That is: some rules for using the supports, which implicate architectural values leaving most decisions open for later design.
  3. A SOFTWARE that manages, once the supports and their rules are defined, the social and cultural structures that will program them in a dynamic manner.

The result of employing the 3 tools in the 3 identified situations creates a matrix that generates a strategic approach to the project. The architects confirm in each case that the urban support will be different (in one case it will be the free areas, in another the infrastructures, in the third the existing building structure), as well as the syntax or the rules of use (based on the group, the object, or the transformation), and the management strategies (centred on property, mobility and uses).

arenas basabe palacios — URBAN SOFTWARE

The result of the matrix is a wide negotiation platform

The matrix will be the beginning of a negotiation between the different actors that decide over the production of the city: the public sector, the private sector, and the popular sector. Arenas Basabe Palacios understand that their job as architects is to supply the tools to increase the number of actors (involving different interests, scales of investments and participation), and achieving a more democratic process in the production of the city.

arenas basabe palacios — URBAN SOFTWARE

Every aspect of the production of the city will be discussed by its actors

Located on quaint, leafy Melrose Place in Los Angeles, the boutique is Marni’s second American outpost and caters to its swelling West Coast fan base. The charming ivy-covered brick façade of the townhouse has been retained, but has been given a modern twist with the addition of large stainless steel arches that curve over the door.

Sybarite — Marni Los Angeles

The interior, which spans a generous 210 square meters, is illuminated by limitless California sunshine pouring into the space through giant windows and ceiling sky lights. This natural light softens the ultra-modern shapes and materials that have become signatures in the Marni architectural vocabulary. The sinuous stainless steel display rails and surfaces wrap around an open plan interior of simple white walls, bleached white timber floor and the soft pastel coloured rug areas

FitFlop - Sybarite

0

The new shop concept for FitFlop reflects the fresh, fun and functional ethos of this growing footwear brand. FitFlop asked for a shop concept that was modern but timeless, interactive, refreshable, easy to merchandise and identifiable via its architecture – for an imminent worldwide rollout. The response is a design that carries the brand’s energy anywhere, is fast and easy to install, and will look as good in LA as it does in Shanghai, whether in a standalone, pop up, or multibrand shop.

Sybarite — FitFlop

Composed mainly of convertible ‘pods’, the interchangeable kit adapts easily to individual locations while maintaining a distinct FitFlop identity. Acting variously as shelves, hanging displays, mirrors and bins for accessories, the moulded pods can be custom-placed to create perfectly flexible space functionality. Product diplays can be broken up, allowing for visual merchandising that is uncluttered, logical and shoppable. Layering builds rhythm, activating a sense of discovery and curiosity.

Sybarite — FitFlop

A language of playfulness engages the shopper. Bijoux nail polish bins sit next to giant campaign images, creating an unexpected contrast in scale while quirky bespoke seating invites the shopper to stay and relax. Bold frit patterns integrate FitFlop graphics into the rounded design and anchor freestanding items. Energised by splashes of colour, an otherwise neutral palette works well with merchandise of any season. The modularity of the system offers unlimited scope to grow and adapt, making the concept future-proof.

Sybarite — FitFlop

The first FitFlop shops employing the new concept opened in the Philippines in January 2011.
