Estensione Paesaggistica - Nicola Spinetto

0
0

Nicola Spinetto — Estensione Paesaggistica

Nicola Spinetto — Estensione Paesaggistica

Nicola Spinetto — Estensione Paesaggistica

Nicola Spinetto — Estensione Paesaggistica

Progetto riqualificazione - Andrea Desimone

Andrea Desimone — Progetto riqualificazione

DEODORO SPORTS COMPLEX, RIO DE JANEIRO As set out by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), the planned facilities for the Rio 2007 Pan American Games and for the 2016 Olympics were grouped into four separate areas of the city – Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Maracanã and Deodoro – which will be linked by an efficient public transport system. This strategy was intended to spread the direct and indirect benefits of both Games among all the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, through the construction of new facilities and infrastructure, as well as through improvements to the existing network. While the Copacabana cluster will consist mainly of temporary structures, the existing venues in the Maracanã and Deodoro clusters will be updated and the Barra da Tijuca cluster will house the vast majority of newly designed venues for 2016. The Deodoro Sports Complex, constructed for the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games, was designed with an awareness that a similar competition venue and program would be applied to a future Olympic Games (Rio 2016). The cluster includes the shooting (http://www.dezeen.com/2013/08/20/national-shooting-centre-by-bcmf-arquitetos/), equestrian , archery, hockey and modern pentathlon facilities, and also permanent training areas for all major national, regional and international competitions. All venues already meet international standards, and will need just minor adjustments and complements for the Olympics. The Deodoro region has the highest demographic of youth within the greater metropolitan region, and it is one of the poorest zones of the city. Until recently this area lacked the infrastructure and facilities to support the basic needs of the population, for instance. The development of facilities for the 2007 Pan American Games has encouraged the less privileged youth of this suburban region to actively participate in sport and to engage on social activities. The addition of some specifically targeted facilities, most notably the X-Park Precinct planned for 2016, will provide even stronger social and sport development legacy and opportunities for the community. The cluster is already an important legacy, which has successfully triggered the renewal and further development of this important vector of the city. The project deals with the complex issues of a unique suburban context comprising a military district, a densely populated favela, a dilapidated industrial area, as well as a large expanse of native vegetation. With its new attractions and improvements, the Deodoro Sports Complex will be consolidated by 2016 as a formidable world-class legacy of high-performance sports, forming a cluster with great potential for catalyzing a general revitalization of a significant area of the city.

EQUESTRIAN CENTER

BCMF Arquitetos — Equestrian Center

Bruno Carvalho

The National Equestrian Center is located in the Deodoro Cluster on the south portion of the Vila Militar neighborhood. Constructed for the 2007 Pan-American games, it has been designed in accordance with International Federation standards for international competitions. The venue will be expanded for the Rio 2016 Games and fully integrated into the Deodoro facilities of the Olympic Training Center, providing an important base for equestrian in Brazil. It will also continue to be used for major competitions, such as the World Military Games.

BCMF Arquitetos — Equestrian Center

Bruno Carvalho

Besides being a much larger than the other venues, with almost 900.000m2, the CHI has some other very diverse conditions. The area is bounded on the west by a formation of slums, characteristic of the informal occupations existing in the neighborhood Magalhães Bastos. To the east and north, the neatly organized military installations (institutions and housing) continue to dominate the landscape, while to the south the steep topography and dense vegetation are the main backdrop. Within the limits of the area there are still some “enclaves” that have been kept outside the secured perimeter of this world-class oasis: a graveyard, a broadcast center, a residential condominium and a battalion. In general we have tried to emphasize the exuberant landscape of Rio de Janeiro, which can be breathtaking even in suburban areas such as Deodoro. Rio has been developing and growing irregularly around a mixture of mountains, forests, beaches, lakes and swamps, and we could say that nature still predominates over architecture in the overall configuration of the city. But besides its notorious and celebrated natural beauty – and the unique and sometimes radical interaction between construction and the natural environment – the city (which was the capital of the country from 1763 to 1960) also has a long tradition of public open spaces and outdoor activities.

BCMF Arquitetos — Equestrian Center

Kaká Ramalho

Therefore, instead of an excessively iconic approach towards the architecture (in Rio the cityscape itself is the dominant icon), we have given priority to the integration of the new facilities and landscape within the extremely complex and diverse urban and natural conditions of the city, somehow inspired by the mythical examples of the modernist architecture of Rio de Janeiro (especially from the heroic period of the 1950s and 60s), which have always been a reference for us.

BCMF Arquitetos — Equestrian Center

Kaká Ramalho

The various buildings for different purposes are all stark elements characterized by strong geometric rigor and the use of few construction elements and materials to create a formal bond between the blocks and a unity of idiom for the entire cluster, contrasting with the luxurious landscape as a backdrop.

This scheme for the revival of Luxembourg’s tram system is inspired by the city’s topography, transport heritage and people. It is based on three simple ideas: firstly remove unnecessary clutter; secondly install locally sourced high-quality paving with bespoke street furniture and finally configure the boulevards and public spaces to respond to the buildings that line them.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Luxtram

View of the tram down Avenue Liberty

Restoring simplicity and sensitivity to the streets and city squares will enable people to enjoy the public realm and to activate the areas with cafés, shops and public uses.

The provision of 11 kilometers of new tram system necessitates working closely with the systems and integration engineers – the trams, signalling, furniture, lighting, graphics and finishes function together to express our vision for the city’s new urbanity.

Luxtram will provide enormous strategic improvements to the public transport network in Luxembourg. Reviving the original tram system, installed in 1859 and removed in the 1960s, will in itself provide huge environmental, urban, economic and social benefits, but beyond the lines themselves is an urban renaissance of the city’s streets and squares.

Alberto Andrich

Inaugurated in 1965 (original design by Eduardo Mendes Guimarães Júnior and Gaspar Garreto) as the second largest stadium in the world, the Mineirão Stadium is located in the surroundings of the Pampulha Lagoon, close to Oscar Niemeyer’s and Burle Marx seminal work, being part of Belo Horizonte’s main postcard. As Brazil was chosen to host the World Cup 2014, opportunity came about to transform the traditional stadium, which façade is heritage listed, into a contemporary multifunctional sports facility. The New Mineirão aims to go beyond its primary role as a world-class sports arena, also offering a range of services, commerce, culture and entertainment for the city, becoming a new hub of activities integrated to the modernist landscape of the leisure and touristic Pampulha complex. The instrument chosen to make this operation possible was a public-private partnership (PPP), determining that the redevelopment of the stadium would be undertaken by a company which, in return, would be granted its use for the next 25 years. The winner of the bid was Minas Arena Consortium, that invited BCMF Architects, renowned for their expertise in sports architecture, to be responsible for the renovation of the New Mineirão.

In this context, to transform the “Pampulha Giant” into a modern multifunctional facility, the interventions proposed are both radical and respectful, reinforcing the monumental original structure within the iconic modernist landscape. As for the original architecture of the Stadium, basically only the outer “shell” remained: the 88 structural semi-porticos, the concrete roof and the upper tiers. The rest of the “core” was completely rebuilt to guarantee the total overhaul inside the arena, including the new extension of the roof, all the new program and infra-structure, besides the lowering of the pitch and the lower tiers redesign, improving the sight-lines for the new capacity of 62.160 seats. The renovation on the outside is total, with a new 200.000 m² operational platform separating the spectators´ from the accredited flow. The “Esplanade” includes various facilities around the stadium, opened to the public as an immense landscaped plaza, visually linked to the Pampulha Lagoon. This platform is sculpted and molded to the site as an artificial topography, integrated with the immediate surroundings, being perceived as a continuation of the street domain. Thus, the public is attracted by programs strategically distributed throughout the esplanade, creating areas with potential to generate activities and movement during all day, seven days a week.

BCMF Arquitetos — Mineirão

Gustavo Xavier

The project has also sustainable features, using solar energy, reusing rainwater, as well as efficient lighting systems, intelligent control of energy and so on (LEED Certification). After the event, many operational areas which are specific for the 2014 Worl Cup will have other uses (institutional, commercial and leisure programs), contributing for the economic sustainability of the complex. The New Mineirão points out ways in which sports mega events can leave a lasting legacy to the host-cities. Here, even though interventions are made on a stadium scale, they respond to the demands of larger scales, such as the neighborhood, the landscape and the city itself. Thus, the ambition is that the urban domain should be invited into the realm and scope of the architecture.

Piccola struttura destinata a residenza estiva.

When it comes to the temporary use of vacant buildings, fire safety is one of the major obstacles to be overcome. After sunset visitors are invited to discover the dark Eiffel building in Maastricht. By creating a landscape of fire in this deserted architectural icon, Maastricht’s Fire Department and RAAAF show that the thousands of vacant properties offer far more possibilities for use than one would expect.

RAAAF — Firemen Walk with Us

Just like our new Master’s program Vacant NL at the Sandberg Institute, the newly founded National Knowledge Platform ‘Interim Use in Development’ (founded in collaboration with Iris Schutten & Sabrina Lindemann), and our project Vacant Appsterdam, the installation ‘Firemen walk with us’ is an elaboration of the vision ‘vacancy for innovation’ which we launched during the Venice Architecture Biennale 2010.

The installation Pretty Vacant encourages visitors to take a fresh look at the empty spaces of the Centraal Museum. The blue window literally and figuratively sheds a new light on the space and complements the architecture of this medieval chapel. The window is based on the ‘negative spaces’ of RAAAF’s earlier installation Vacant NL, which was the Dutch submission for the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010. The installation in the Gerrit Rietveld-designed pavilion in Venice showed the enormous potential of 10,000 disused public buildings in the Netherlands from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries.

RAAAF — Pretty Vacant

The Centraal Museum aims to acquire work of what its director Edwin Jacobs calls “new-thinkers in images” at the intersection of art and architecture. Through the acquisition of this installation by RAAAF with support from the Mondriaan Fund, the Centraal Museum has realized its ambition of adding Vacant NL to the ‘Collectie Nederland’.
