Rector Office at Vigo University Campus - Miralles Tagliabue EMBT

This building is a piece of the University Campus of Vigo, arranged from the master plan done by this office. The building is a rectangle that bows on the back part to adapt itself to the form of the area, following the guidelines of the classroom building.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

The façades are composed of concrete whose texture echoes the decomposition of the Mondariz granite hung from the metal profile and oak carpentries in a T form, with the uppermost part of the granite rising over the profile of the roof. The play of concrete and oak continue into the interior, where the geometry of the stairs connect the levels and spaces which are flooded with the light from above.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

The building’s program includes the chancellor’s and vice-chancellor’s offices, the press office, the general secretary and other administrative personnel, and meeting rooms arranged in a radial form. Some spaces open to others and all spectacularly frame views through the structure. Natural light penetrates everything.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

The main hall is a ramped auditorium that is projected over the larger spaces between the tripartite structure in a T form, whose top wall is in the opposite direction of the stairs and creates an impressive form on the lateral façade.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

Our desire to engage in dialogue with the environment is expressed through the choice of materials, particularly granite, which is used for the construction of the outdoor steps, the square’s pavement and the detailing of the mosaic that covers the façades.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

The exterior surface displays a horizontal division into two areas, one of exposed concrete with a similar texture to that of the stone detailing of the façade and another of Gris Mondariz granite stone with concrete elements whose texture tries to resemble the façade mosaic producing a veneer that is fixed with steel profiles.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Rector Office at Vigo University Campus

A further reference to the landscape comes from the choice of oak wood for the floor surfaces and windows frames both interior and exterior.

Hafencity Public Spaces - Miralles Tagliabue EMBT

The project develops a new public space within an existing harbour structure that is changed form a sea port into a city quarter, by regenerating and urbanizing the shores of the River Elbe in the town centre, and stands out by offering a great diversity of spaces to allow inhabitants and visitors to take advantage of the nearby waterway. This is a further step for a sustainable restructuring of an industrial wasteland, preserving other territories from being newly colonised by the city growth.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

The project is divided in 15 separate parcels in a total area of 150 000m2, with the main emphasis on integrating the existing historic heritage of the harbour into the new design development.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

The new urban planning brings the public in a fluid movement from the new housing blocks down to the water, making for everyone’s enjoyment a new artificial landscape that is inhabited by natural elements: water and plants.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

A system of ramps, stairways, and catwalks connect the three different levels: Water level (±0,00) A big floating platform provides access to small boats, sport boats and ferryboats, as well as leisure areas. Special floating elements provide the presence of greenery and trees on the water level. Low promenade level (+4,50) This level is mainly for pedestrians, host small cafes and permit a relax promenade overlooking the water. This level will be flooded only on specially bad days on an average of twice or three times a year. Street level (+7,50) We provide pedestrian and playing places also at street level, introducing here, as well as in the lower levels, the presence of water, of trees and green, of playing areas and promenades, indicated by pergolas.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

Hamburg has always been a city which recognised and worked with the conditions of the surrounding. This is why the river Elbe was never controlled by locks, and the floods were accepted, by integrating the natural conditions from the beginning, in order to guarantee a sustainable planning of the area.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

The flooding protection strategy is to give water space rather than contain it, in order to protect the rest of the city. Two thirds of the new public spaces are floodable. It is consciously accepted that they will be flooded, and they have been designed in consequence. They are not useless remaining spaces, but usable and liveable. The city is at a higher level, always protected from the water.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

In terms of transportation the use of cars is reduced to street level. The docks zone and the terraces are only for walking and biking.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

Traditional harbour materials and plants were used, which are sustainable and resistance to the climate, and where chosen to last for a long time period, such as brick, betonwerkstein, and native adaptive species as oak trees, willows, eschen, grass.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT — Hafencity Public Spaces

Hafencity can also be seen as a project that works on social, cultural, ecological and economics level. Its value on a European level is its complex integration of all issues of life.

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

IL CENTRO DELLA CITTA

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Riconoscibile. Introverso. Accentratore.

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Il progetto prevede:

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Le modifiche relative al nuovo progetto riguarderanno:

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Giovanni Bello, Enrico de Cenzo, Luigi Innammorato, Roberto Riccio — NSP

Sitting in the midst of an expanding landscape, the summer house is an open-plan dwelling allowing the inhabitants and its visitors to experience a continual interior/exterior natural environment. Raised above the ground by concrete pillars, the house extends over the sloping terrain with interior spaces and terraces filtered from the outer landscape by movable fabric screens stretching along the perimeter. The free composition allows the house to open-up as well as close itself yet always maintain a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. When open, the large windows and sliding doors let the house dissolve into the landscape. When closed, inner terraces bring continual daylight into the house and allow the inhabitants to enjoy the outside in their own privacy.

The new building offers specific rooms for various types of sport. Each room allows the practicing of activities in optimal conditions – natural day lighting, ventilation and acoustic treatment. The ground floor façade designs a silk screen glass base – expressing its will to be a showcase for sport.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes — Sports Centre Hector Berlioz

The different activities are visible from the pathway; the landscape design announces the presence of sport. Red lines on the floor reminds of the track for athletics. The volume put on the base is covered with a copper skin and alternates perforated panels with opaque ones. The glass covered zones are covered with perforated metal shutters. The façade is animated by the rhythm in the variation of transparency. The functioning of the equipment is optimized. The unique entrance allows a central distribution of the different levels. The connections between the different rooms are short and clearly distributed.

FORTEZZA VERRUA SAVOIA - Mauro Bellora, Elena Masoero, Giuliana Morisano, Flavio Tondo, MGA4 Studio - Bellora Morisano Associati, Masoero - Tondo Architetti Associati

Footbridge over the Rhine - Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

0
0

Two main roads, the « Hauptstrasse » in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and the « Rue de France » in Hunningue, France, are situated on the same axis. To emphasize this highly symbolic and visual connection between the two countries, the footbridge is put along the axis and not into it for the view not to be disturbed. This visual connection is enhanced by the physical one, as the design of the bridge is a response to the situation. The technical challenge is evident.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes — Footbridge over the Rhine

The three-country bridge between France and Germany has an asymmetrical cross section. Hence, two principals underlie the design. First of all the bridge is an arch bridge with a span of 229,4 meters, which is a world record for a pedestrian arch bridge. Engineers have specific formulas for defining the type of bridge in relation to its span. Thereby the engineer’s reflex here was to build a suspension bridge.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes — Footbridge over the Rhine

It underlines the extremely strong symbolism of the very important gesture of spanning between France and German, which was conceived as drawing a bow between the two countries. Developing this sense as the intrinsic motivation behind the structure of the bridge, we thought that there might also be advantages, not just disadvantages, of spanning rather than suspension. This turned out the be the case, the completed bridge was shipped in one piece to the site. This would not have been possible with a suspension bridge whose assemblage in situ would also have been much more expensive.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes — Footbridge over the Rhine

The second significant feature of this bridge is the manner in which the genius loci, the spirit of the river landscape and the elements of the particular on-site situation, were integrated into the design. This was mainly achieved in the decision to position the anchorage points of the bridge at the former departure points of a ferryboat that travelled across the Rhine between the two shores. This served to integrate a pre-existing line-of-sight extending from the urban fabric of the two border cities via two main streets directly opposite each other.

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes — Footbridge over the Rhine

Putting the bridge deck at a high level, as it is generally done, would have created a barrier in between the line-of-sight, thus separating instead of connecting the two countries. This problem as well as a desire to integrate the pre-existing decision not to put the arch bridge exactly on axis, but rather to shift it slightly to one side. Further, the inclined south arch leans against the north arch in a way that opens up the space and makes it possible to maintain eye contact from one riverside to the other. Although suggested by engineers, a symmetrical bridge would not have been suitable in this context.

Nicolai Cultural Center - Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter

0
0

Nicolai Cultural Centre is a conversion of 5 previous school buildings enclosing a common schoolyard. Each building represents a period in Danish school history, from the first school dating 1856 to the last built that opened in 1909. None of the buildings were no longer in use as school buildings, two were listed as cultural heritage. The project is a result of a competition in 2002, which programmed a conversion of the complex to be the future Cultural Centre of Kolding. The competition were hosted by The City of Kolding, supported by the foundation RealDania, who were especially interested in new ways of conversion and use of listed cultural buildings.

Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter — Nicolai Cultural Center

The main concept for the conversion was conceived in close collaboration with the landscape architect.
  • To connect the 5 buildings, all very different in material and volume, with the use of the same material, – corroded steel for all new additions. Large vertical and horizontal slabs of corroded steel walls connect the different volumes and make a sense of unity.
  • To keep the informal asphalt schoolyard as the surface connecting to history, but upgraded and spatially nuanced.
  • A collage like strategy for the renovation and conversion changes. The quite tight budget was strongly prioritised. Some surfaces were stripped down bare, some were left as it was and some were clearly added new additions. Some spaces were altered dramatically and some barely painted.

Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter — Nicolai Cultural Center

The cultural Center consists of 5 different houses with their own functional identity.
  • Cinema house and café The Cinema House holds a non-profit art cinema, with two cinema halls, and in connection a videotheque, café and restaurant. In addition to this the local TV station has studios and offices.
  • House of heritage The House of heritage holds the archive of local history and, in connection to this, open study offices, lecture hall, meeting spaces and administration
  • 3. House of Children’s Culture The House of childrens culture is supported by the LOA foundation and is an open program were the children of Kolding can do different cultural activities, drama, theatre, dance and movement, and work in the different workshops. The building is converted to offer as much transparency and openness as possible within the old structural frame, and at the same time facilitate strange and unexpected paths, mysterious places and new views. The main themes that carry the different interconnecting spatiality as you move up through the house are the cave, the forrest and the sky . Functionally The house has a small theatre with connecting wardrobes, a double height space with robes and a feathering floor for dance and movement, and two permanent workshop spaces, and in addition mobile workshop furniture that holds everything you need for woodwork, sewing etc.
  • The house of arts and crafts mainly holds studio spaces for rent for local professional artists.
  • The house of music is an old Gym that was added a new small addition that consists of entrance hall / foyer and an intimate entrance courtyard.

tavolo CLESSIDRA - Sergio Aruanno, Coop.arl LEGNO SERVICE Tortolì

0
0

Who ever said that pleasure wasn’t functional? Charles Eames.

@home kitchen and pavillon at the Salone del Mobile 2014

@home thinks the kitchen out of the conventional box, reinterpreting the DNA of those forms that the market conventionally names kitchen and which remind us the more complex memories of an inhabited space rich in materiality, flavours and fragrances, a fireplace which to get warm around, a table to work on or share good food as well as a good conversation.

C+S Architects — @home

The @home kitchen through the decorated glasses of the pavillon

The most sophisticated technical solutions of design fabrication are combined to mould the table foot and the thin plains in stainless steel and titanium pushing the product beyond the conventions.

The @home version in titanium through the decorated glasses of the pavillon

@home overcomes the idea of the kitchen as a limited superfunctional and aseptic machine.

Detail of the table foot

Splitting up the system into its mayor components, the kitchen is magically turned into a space: the conventional kitchen island becomes a generous wood-made table to chat, sit, work or cook around. An epicentre is laid on the table: the fireplace as a bright steinless steel made plate. Other components are the library, where to collect our precious cooking books or other objects; a contemporary kitchen pantry in decorated ceramics, and the sideboards, which open up to reveal the beauty of their sophisticated interiors.

Detail of the hood-organ

The hood is an organ, a vibration of light and sounds materialized by a series of cilinders which (together with the smell aspiration) both enlighten the fireplace and can play the music, turning the scents of the food into music. To these elements a new one is added, a small greenhouse to grow those spices so important for cooking tasty flavours.

The titanium version of the @home kitchen

@home is the space which instigates a special relationship with its user to make him/her well-being at home.

.elmar pavillon at the Salone del Mobile 2014

As Arnheim wrote: The relationship between the architectural object and its users is one of intense interaction.

C+S Architects — @home

The steinless steel and decorated ceramic version of the @home kitchen

The sketch of the @home table

C+S Architects — @home

Detail of the pantry in decorated ceramic
