mdu Architetti, Marcello Marchesini, Cristiano Cosi, Alessandro Corradini, Valerio Barberis, Tino Grisi, Angelo d'Appolito — Complesso Inter-parrocchiale San Benedetto

mdu Architetti, Marcello Marchesini, Cristiano Cosi, Alessandro Corradini, Valerio Barberis, Tino Grisi, Angelo d'Appolito — Complesso Inter-parrocchiale San Benedetto

HOUSE OF HUNGARIAN MUSIC - AND-RÉ

The House of Hungarian Music is a music-like experience. Similarly to a concert, the parts construct the whole. Time allows it to be perceived. Momentums, contrasts, melody, scale, quietness or drama, compose the spatial argument, discourse and narrative of this “frozen music”. The building curved walls are inspired by music. The building stands as a frozen moment in the composition plot. Like a visible form of sound, architecture takes the shape of fluid melodic waves. Creating paths of spatial discovery, promoting sensations, playing with contrasts of light, with materiality, enhancing a free-will democratic possibility of walkthrough the building, the visitor is invited to discover, to play, to pause, to stop, to move forward or backward.

Compact Karst House - Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti

0
0

The region of Karst was once covered with Oak trees that Venetians have extensively used for building up the City on water. They have left the wind to peel off earth revealing limestone grounds. In this landscape the tradition of small, compact, stony and almost windowless houses developed and remained until today.

Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti — Compact Karst House

Following this tradition determined the design of small compact stony house corresponding to the needs of the young family and current technological principles. Redefinition of traditional stony Karst house led to the concept of proto-house as compact, stony, pitched roof volume for contemporary countryside living in this region. The house is conceived as monolithic volume with two inserted wooden volumes connected with interim landing. Ground floor operates mostly as public or semi-public space with multiple grand landscape views as on the other hand the upper floor stands very private with sky views only. The space is divided with two inserted wooden volumes which in ground floor contain kitchen with dining or bathroom and in the upper floor master bedroom and children’s room. House in a house concept allow each bedroom to perform as primarily wooden pitched house, where one literally feels like sleeping in his own (symbolic) house and not a room. The bridge connecting both houses acts as playroom.

Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti — Compact Karst House

The house has three large square windows which open views towards hilltop church in Italy to the west, forest to the south and entrance platform to the east. The redefinition of traditional stony Karst roof, with its texture, colour, material and its steep inclination is executed as contemporary concrete interpretation with intense technological ingenuity. Materially inseparable connection between the facade and the roof is key allusion to the image of traditional Karst village.

Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti — Compact Karst House

The design of the house addresses the relationship between contemporary and tradition, it opens up the question about the characteristics of anonymous traditional built architecture from which it originates and simultaneously establishes the relationship between contemporary interpretation and traditionally conditional domain of synthesis.

ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE The Guggenheim Helsinki is based on the desire to provide a social and cultural place, to residents and visitors. It’s a real public space that is a continuity of a walk and that arouses curiosity by creating an architectural and landscaping event while promoting its context. The project brings to bear rather special attention to the perspective, both physical and mental in search of the “Genius loci”. The project plays on the vertical and horizontal, as a sacred place which is spread along the waterfront. It creates an artificiallandscape. The architectural proposal works with the power of the so-called Nordic atmosphere.

JKLN ARCHITECTE — Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition

CONCEPT DESIGN The proposal consists of a series of vertical layers, which define the main volumes created by different galleries. Glass walls workswith transparency and opacity.Walls define the museum and create a series of interconnecting galleries. Galleries are parallel from each other and to the quayside which can be developed in an art walk. The structure provides light. The building is composed like a cathedral with a nave and aisles. This project tries to touch the beauty, the purity and the powerful of a spiritual place.Walls alternately delineate the site boundaries, inviting the public to enter and providing views through the building. The heart of the building is composed by an horizontal compressed lobby. It is penetrated by an atrium creating a major event space for the city and provides views into the galleries where you can find a one scale piece of art for example. This atrium illuminates the ground floor and welcomes the visitors.Upstairs, the visitor can enjoy the various galleries. Exhibition galleries are flexible, contiguous spaces that can be combined or divided as needed. Outdoor spaces for the displays of sculpture and architectural interventions are places between galleries. Concrete beams are held at varying heights to create variations in scale, proportion and enclosure, providing a diversity of day lighting conditions and curatorial opportunities. Collections storage and management offices are on an adjacent and smallest aisle.

JKLN ARCHITECTE — Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition

SUSTAINABILITY Bioclimatic strategy developed allows to get as close as possible to the comfort zone. The aim is to reduce the ecological footprint, and generate architectural value, quality and use an environment for the exhibition of art works with a wider audience. In the interstices of the concrete beams is membranes air cushion. It reduces the burden of snow when the air in the upper chamber is at the temperature to melt the snow. The supply of light is controlled by changing the distance between the marks of the film. The interior space with its wooden surfaces, and movable panels stands in stark contrast to the almost monolithic appearance of the exterior.

CASA QUINDICIQUATTRO - FANTOLINO FABIO

APPROACH The proposal seeks to solve a dense program, fulfilling the intention to achieve a responsible and rigorous solution, in a sustainable building with reduced construction and maintenance costs. Despite the program’s density and the necessary functional maximization, the objective was to create a dynamic architecture that stimulates the senses, exploring spatial and plastic properties, aiming for an architectural object based on performance in all its variables.

AND-RÉ— UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE

CONCEPT The concept aims for an integrated, rational and holistic system that provides urban dynamics and promotes relationships with the city morphology. The proposal presents values of urban synergy, therefore representing an important, unique and captivating equipment, despite the rationality of its design and implementation, responding sensitively to the contemporary context and the promoter expectations. The project is developed on a base modular system that allows the rational organization of the extensive program. Strategically, the rule was used to create exceptions, highlighting particular spatial moments between the programmatic repetitions. The internal rational system – such as the bone structure of the building – is coated with provocative skin that creates visual engagement, promoting an aesthetic relation between the architectural object and the users.

AND-RÉ— UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE

ORGANIZATION AND SITE RELATIONS It was proposed a distributing of the program in three main blocks, arranged over a base that unites the ground level, allowing a joint distribution through the building. The volumetric composition allows visual permeability through the terrain, avoiding it to became an obstacle and a visual imposition in the landscape, to absorb new perspectives and landscape visual frameworks. The volumetric organization is designed to maximize the views and solar orientation of the rooms, intention also enhanced by the geometric manipulation of the facade.

Just like the other European capitals such as Rome, Venice, or Barcelona, Paris risks to become a city museum. The increase of tourists in the French Capital causes panic and also leads to a gradual decentralization from the Parisians.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — Eau-Berge

Paris has the largest concentration in m² of museums in the world, nearly 120 museums in total, with many urban areas which tend to be transformed into living conservatories.

This makes the city susceptible to become an architectural “outdoor” museum. The continued growth of tourist attractions therefore risks making everyday life less interesting for local residents.

In order to meet the needs of short-term housing for tourists, we decided to make further use of the banks of the Seine river, for example the Banks of Saint-Augustin.

Inspired by the structure and shape of the booksellers along the river and the cabin hotels in Japan, we propose to use a similar system in the spaces of great cultural attraction, hoping to reduce the decentralization of the citizens of Paris.

Our proposal is made up of a series of cabins that will be installed on platforms in relation to the Seine and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.

Private house Budapest III - ZSK Architects

The existing and already several times refurbished private house lies on the Római fürdő (meaning Roman Bath) area of Budapest. Its owners are enthusiastic fanciers of contemporary art. Parallel to the street both sides of the building have been enlarged by the architects. By doing this, together with the light weight superstructure and the low-pitched roof their aim was to construct as compact a building volume as possible. The form of the building was inspired by the Roman atrium houses, and hence the inward inclination of the roof is a reinterpretation of the roman era’s building traditions. The usage of contemporary materials not only reflects the structure of the enlarged house but also the openness of the owners towards new and unfamiliar architectural solutions.

Cowshed Wildenstein - Kury Stähelin Architekten

The historic ensemble of Wildenstein is integrated in the castle heritage area from the 13th century. During the years the site was extended with different typological constructions incorporated in a strong landscape environment. The strategy for the project was developed around 3 different protection layers: existing nature elements, cultural landscape and existing classified monuments. Reacting to this special condition, the site was redesigned with a new building – a cowshed – that extends and reinterprets the existing farmyard context. The new building introduces a “closer” dialogue with the surroundings, incorporating at the same time the current requirements of the organic agricultural production. The scale of the intervention reinforces the existing alignments and landscape elements creating a new „constellation“ on the site. The new volume generates different yards in between the existing buildings, merging the functional needs of the agro-production and, at the same time, introducing distinguishable atmospheres for the ensemble.

Kury Stähelin Architekten — Cowshed Wildenstein

The project inverts the historic large pitched roofs and relates itself to the new typological element – the central courtyard. The inverted roof built around this space offers a good light / ventilation conditions and, as such, a perfect environment for the animals where the cows can move freely. All the functional areas are placed around this void providing an optimal functional flow.

Kury Stähelin Architekten — Cowshed Wildenstein

The building develops as a set of structural wooden frames that create rhythms and space hierarchies. The floor plan is ruled with a strategic metric to define all interior spaces merging the “domestic” atmosphere (for the cows) with the existing landscape. The long facades are designed as an open wooden frame that incorporates references to traditional and rural wood ornament. They are the mediators of the repetitive, internal structure and the surrounding cultural landscape.

Sint Jansklooster - Zecc Architecten

The water tower is situated in the middle of a protected nature reserve owned by Nature Monuments; De Wieden in the province Overijssel. BOEi and Nature Monuments took up the plan to transform the tower to a watchtower. A spectacular ’ route architecturale” will lead you up to a height of 45 m. Upstairs four windows give you a 360 degree view of De Wieden.

Zecc Architecten — Sint Jansklooster

The journey upstairs begins with a closed staircase that leads to the first floor on 4 m. height. Here you have arrived in a room that is 24 m. in height and houses a spectacle of old and new stairs. The new stairs that lead through the body of the water tower has been made of wood. This to on the one hand add a warm element that contrasts with the stark concrete walls of the tower. On the other hand it is a gesture to Nature Monuments by using a raw and unpolished natural material. By adding the new route complementary to the old existing one, spatial interaction is created. Where the old stairs led up alongside the walls, the new stairs zigzag across the tower to reinforce spatial perception. The new stairs lead up to the level of the floor just below the immense concrete reservoir at 28 m. height.

Zecc Architecten — Sint Jansklooster

From this level the original stairs went up through a tight space alongside the exterior of the tank. Now a steel winding stairs depart from the floor below the reservoir and goes right through the bottom of the empty tank. The stairs slowly wind up alongside the walls and intensifies the spatial perception of the reservoir, the heart of the tower. You feel feeble as a visitor and you get an impression of the huge quantity of water that used to provide water pressure for the entire region.

Zecc Architecten — Sint Jansklooster

At the top of the tower you have reached the look-out post. The ‘lid’ of the tank has been partly removed in order to create steps to offer more of an overview for groups at the look-out post. The transparent raster floor makes you imagine yourself to be right in the middle of the tank. Alongside the four small existing windows four large ones have been added that complete the view of De Wieden.  The public makes an exciting and multifaceted journey upstairs and is rewarded with a beautiful view.

Zecc Architecten — Sint Jansklooster

Repurposing the water tower was an intensive track. Not in the least because of the procedural actions due to changing the zoning plan or eradicating any objections or doubts from the inhabitants of the surroundings, who often view the tower as their communal property. The water tower is a national monument, which made alterations to the exterior and interfering with the reservoir a difficult point. The strength of this plan lies in a combination of extreme restraint on the exterior and an architectural statement on the inside of the tower.

Zecc Architecten — Sint Jansklooster

The water tower is naturally a landmark in the landscape of De Wieden This iconic building has now been made inhabitable. Its new public function, the ‘route architecturale’ and the windows to the surroundings reinforce this even more. Connecting the people, the landscape and the monumental water tower has ensured a reinforcement of a feeling of identity tat is linked to the place.

Lighthouse as inspiration.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

Given the strong maritime history of Finland, location of the museum site at the Etelasatama, the symbolic gateway to the city from the sea and the need for the museum to be the new cultural icon of Helsinki, our concept draws from the most prominent seaside structures of Finland’s history: Majakat or the Lighthouse. These structures always taller than anything around them, highly visible both day and night, were first symbols of the civilization lying beyond their maritime border. Guggenheim Helsinki becomes the 21st century cultural symbol of Helsinki at Etelasatama entry point much the same way as the traditional Majakat (lighthouses). The new structure along with The Helsinki and Uspenski Cathedrals triangulate to cement the place of Helsinki amongst World Class cities. We propose here a very horizontal contrasted by a very vertical place of gathering for families and visitors, a place to navigate through and take in the views, and view art at one’s own pace and pleasure. The small footprint, height, and prominence of a typical light house as metaphor, and the modernist heritage in Helsinki thus become the ideal starting point for our concept for the new Guggenheim.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

Concept

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

With the large site and the significant program, we divided the program into two distinct categories! Those functions that could and must be accommodated at the base of the building, such as Collection Storage and Management, Maintenance and Operations, Dining and Kitchen, Flexible Performance Hall, loading docks, and those that must be in the tower, mainly the Exhibition Galleries and administrative offices. The Museum Tower then became the destination, a visible and distinctive new symbol and an agent for change. Gallery spaces were divided into 4 wood clad two story volumes in the Finnish Wood Tradition floating inside the transparent tower’s outer skin. A gently sloped ramp reminiscent of NY Guggenheim could take the visitor all the way from ground floor lobby to all the gallery levels and as well as the Sky Winter Gardens which separated the galley floors. The Sky Winter Gardens become places for socialization, dining, temporary and experiential art exhibits, retail stores, classes, etc. Taking the Public Space “Vertical” as well as horizontal, allows us to take full advantage of available views! The entire experience of traversing through the gentle ramps up the building and the Sky Winter Gardens would give the visitor magnificent and varying views of the Helsinki City and Waterfront. As the visitor takes the ramp from one level to another, he/she gets glimpses of the art that is on display within the gallery pod through carefully placed window displays facing out!

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

The Gallery Pods are solid walled and completely controlled environments with high ceilings and they each get controlled natural lighting from carefully located skylights at each Sky Garden Level and through the building’s transparent ventilated outer skin which at night turns into a Digital Art Canvas. Below each gallery space level is a normal ceiling height administrative office/archival level with windows out to the view. These levels typically house all the public restroom facilities as well which are easily accessible from the Gallery or Sky Garden levels by going a level down or up.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

The top most sky garden is accessible to an open rooftop observation deck during the good weather with a Helipad on top.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

The base of the building is a gradual sloping plaza/sculpture garden which starts at the vehicle drop off area at the entry intersection of Etelaranta and Laivasillankatu and rises gently for the entire length of the site to connect via a pedestrian bridge to the Tahtitornin Vuori Park. The entire plaza will be surfaced with local cobble stone and strips of turf interspersed with temporary and permanent works of sculpture. Under this plaza, are all the support function of the building such as Collection and storage, Maintenance and operations, Loading Docks, VIP Parking, a new 1000 SM Passenger terminal , Café and restaurant and the Flexible Performance Hall which pokes through the plaza and presents itself as a backdrop for digital media presentations during concerts and events. In essence, the raised plaza at the base of the new Guggenheim Tower becomes an extension of the park and its connection to the sea. The Tower’s limited footprint preserves the views of Etelasatama from the Tahtitornin Vuori.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

Sustainability

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

By conceiving the museum as a tower and reducing its physical footprint not only the views of Etelasatama from Tahtitornin Vuori Park have been preserved, the carbon footprint of the building has been minimized, all while maximizing its efficiency structurally and energy-wise. This concept has additionally allowed for allocation of maximum site area to use of plazas, green roof space for social gathering and events while housing the ancillary function of the museum protected and out of view on the ground level. The use of Sky Winter Gardens as additional social gathering spaces with natural light and supply of fresh air through the tower’s double skin digital facade provide for maximum comfort and energy saving throughout Helsinki’s four seasons.

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

Summary

Mark Vaghei — MUSEO MAJAKKA GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

A museum of 21st century no longer needs to follow the path of traditional closed box museums. We are proposing here a place of gathering for family and visitors, a place to navigate through and take in the views and view art at your own pace and pleasure. A prominent new symbol for the city visible from afar. A maritime icon using Finnish wood as its primary cladding material supplanted by the transparency of glass. A Sustainable and efficient structure built for the long term. A timeless statement far from the architectural jargon of the day! A Museum different than any other in the world
