The project completes and defines the residencial front of the Canonge street until Font street. Its particular position allows to develop a third facade, when for this typology we usually have two, the street one and the courtyard one. It’s just through this third facade that take place the entrance of two houses at the first floor, while the access to the ground floor house is on Canonge street. Another particularity of this project is the creation of a public space along the mentioned third facade that connects to Canonge street. The ground floor house instead, has the access to the whole internal garden.

Arriola & Fiol — 3 HABITATGES CANONGE 52

The urban design parameters define the volume through the alignment to the existent street. To use the full potentials of the building area, and with the aim of developing a two-houses residences, the solution was to build a gabled roof.

Arriola & Fiol — 3 HABITATGES CANONGE 52

The facade is made by the same material, texture and color treatment, as the roof. The aim is to highlight the whole volume like a homogeneous element that will complete the Canonge street and defines the perspective of Font street. All external surfaces will be paneled with coloured fibercement elements, in order to create a ventilated facade and roof system to give continuity to the all.

The new house is the first building in Pujalt’s village built with contemporary construction systems, which rebuilds the historical structure of the village while keeping its original architectural typology, its street pattern and its presence within the landscape. Pujalt is a township in l’Anoia region. The village on top of a hill comprises a set of buildings, following three curved streets: carrer de dalt, carrer Major (Main Street) and carrer de baix. The new house is located in a derelict plot, on top of carrer Major. The ruins of the old stone walls shape the ground floor. Two old gates are reopen to carrer Major, the most unique, with a gothic arch, becomes the main entrance.

Arriola & Fiol — CASA A PUJALT

It is conceived as a small house with a view to the landscape, with an open plan ground floor (100 m²), 2 upper floors (100+100 m²), garden (200 m²) and garage (50m². The new construction is articulated with a reticular concrete structure, configuring three functional strips: living, service area and dormitories. In the same rationality, the new stone panels are drywall construction. The large openings keep the verticality of traditional windows and are even wider where the views are more spectacular.

VV-FLAT - carmine Magna, Valeria Travanti

The main architectural idea was provided by the “genius loci” typical of this area of Rome, with some industrial style elements added. The district was born in the ‘30s and was characterized by the main building system of that period, such as brick vaults along steel beams and concrete tiles on the floors. The house overlooks on two courtyard; one of them is quite small. For that reason some lighting solution were studied to spread light throughout the rooms, using internal glass windows. To add a industrial, yet not prominent style, some row concrete elements were used.

Foyles Bookshop - Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands

This new flagship store for booksellers Foyles at 107 Charing Cross Road in London is the largest bookstore to be built in the UK this century.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Foyles Bookshop

Located in the former site of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design on Charing Cross Road, it sits metres from their old store which was its home for over 100 years. Designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, Foyles 107 Charing Cross Road will sell a range of over 200,000 different titles on four miles (6.5km) of shelves. With 37,000 square feet of flexible retail space, spread across eight shop floors in the two halves of the four storey building, the interior layout allows for easy navigation and the serendipitous discovery of new books.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Foyles Bookshop

The scheme strips away a century’s ad hoc accretions to reveal the original structure of the old art school building. By enlarging the existing central lightwell, an atrium is created which floods daylight into the centre of the building. The whole bookshop is manifest and easily accessible, with only one short flight of stairs required to connect between each floor section and glazed fronted lifts servicing each shop floor.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Foyles Bookshop

There were significant challenges to the change in use from art school to bookshop. Low ceiling heights mean that services such as heating and cooling need to be tightly packed. Rather than concealing them behind a suspended ceiling, which would have reduced the spatial quality, they are on view in their foil wrappings. Hanging below them are a sequence of lighting tracks supporting the latest low glare LED light fittings.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Foyles Bookshop

The handsome exterior of the building has been cleaned and restored and a new rear extension enlarges the ground, first and second floors. A roof extension is clad in carefully detailed zinc and complements the beautifully crafted original brickwork below.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands — Foyles Bookshop

The spaces inside the store are open, light and designed to be flexible: giving the bookseller great freedom in setting out the departments and the displays to respond to changing book reading patterns. A new cafe, gallery and event space provide the facilities for an ambitious programme of in-store events. At the rear of the ground floor is the original assembly hall and gym – a magnificent space that was used to host meetings and dances. A mezzanine was subsequently added, which largely destroyed its volumetric quality: the conversion has removed a significant part to restore the double-height space.

Filo Art Bar - MAR office

How can a multipurpose art gallery and bar compete and emerge in a well-established gallery circuit Which kind of experience can it offer?

MAR office — Filo Art Bar

These were the project’s starting points. The client’s brief was about a space that would accommodate both an art gallery – which could also work as a multifunctional space – and a bar. The project is developed according to two main strategies: to create a space, neutral and flexible enough to accommodate the gallery; to create a nonconventional bar that could be “inserted” in the gallery, thus generating an interactive relation between the two different functions. Filo is located in the Naviglio Pavese Rd, at the ground floor of a Social Housing building of the thirties. It has a U shaped floor-plan; the front rectangular room faces the canal, while the two back rooms are respectively connected to the back courtyard and to a garden. According to the space outline, we pursued 3 main objectives: to maximize the space; to activate the façade; to enhance circulation. The space was considered like a void that could support a variety of programs: it was designed to allow new kinds of activity, ranging from cultural programming to coffee break. The core of the project was the notion that Filo Art Bar should enable change: change in the configuration of the space itself, of its functions, and of its contents.

MAR office — Filo Art Bar

Three main elements occupy the space: two fixed ones, the Bench-Display and the Service Volume; an interactive one, the Bar Volume. The Bench-Display runs along the façade, occupying the whole length of the main room except for the entrance door space. It can be used in different ways, depending on the on-going programs, consequently it defines the front store and creates a relation with the street and the passers-by. Loose tables and chairs are placed in front of it and provide a coffee-place scenario. The Service Volume divides the two exhibition rooms, generating a sequence of spaces that ends in the private outdoor yard, that is visible from the street but accessible just from the inside, like a “secret garden”.

MAR office — Filo Art Bar

The Bar Volume is the element that most dramatically influences the whole space. Its rhomboidal volume projects from the back of the house room and its presence, which, as for geometry and materials, differs from the rest of the space, creates a new condition. It’s a stack of three boxes, irregularly shifted in a dynamic composition. The central element moves vertically and creates different configurations that suits the multiple uses and needs of the space. It allows to close the bar completely or to play with different heights that unveil the upper volume and its contents. The translucent moveable box is hanged to the upper volume and it’s mounted on motorized tracks that allow it to be positioned differently. The lower and the upper box are clad with birch wood panels inlaid with a rhomboidal pattern, a typical Milanese reference.

MAR office — Filo Art Bar

The lower box contains the bar counter and the cabinets; its unfolded length is 9 m, and provides a wide and comfortable support for the various activities. Both the movement and the translucency create a continuous dialogue between the inside and the outside of the volume, emphasizing the mutable and dynamic inner nature of the project. Also graphic design plays an important role in the project; it was developed in collaboration with Barbara Busatta and Dario Buzzini. The result is fully consistent and integrated with the project. Filo’s blog, set up by the two designers, followed the work in progress and the teamwork from the very beginning.
