Lenbachhaus Museum - Foster + Partners

0
0

A ceremony will be held today, attended by German Culture Minister, Mrs Wanka; the Mayor of Munich, Mr Ude; Lord Foster and Dr Helmut Friedl, Director of the Lenbachhaus Museum, to mark the completion of a major project to transform the experience for visitors.

1198_fp470758_webview_large

The Museum’s historic buildings have been carefully restored and the exhibition spaces augmented by a spectacular new wing, which provides an ideal environment for viewing the magnificent ‘Blue Rider’ collection. As well as radically improving the buildings’ environmental performance, the remodelling has created a new entrance and social spaces, including a restaurant, terrace, education facilities and a dramatic full-height atrium, where the old is articulated within the new.

1198_fp470748_webview_large

Built in 1891 as a studio and villa for the artist Franz von Lenbach, the Lenbachhaus Museum has been gradually extended over the last century. However, its buildings were in need of renewal and the museum lacked the facilities to cater to a growing audience of 280,000 people a year. Redefining circulation throughout the site, the project has transformed a complex sequence of spaces of different periods into a unified, legible museum that is accessible and open to all. Peeling away the unnecessary historical accretions, a 1972 extension has been removed to reveal the wall of the original villa, which has been sympathetically restored in ochre render. The different historical elements are then unified along Richard-Wagner Street by a new gallery pavilion, containing two levels of exhibition space. The new building is intended as a ‘jewel box’ for the treasures of the gallery – it is clad in metal tubes of an alloy of copper and aluminium, their colour and form designed to complement the villa’s rich ochre hue and textured facades.

1198_fp477116_webview_large

Inside the new building, a sequence of intimate galleries display the Museum’s internationally- renowned ‘Blue Rider’ collection of early twentieth-century Expressionist paintings, echoing the domestic scale of their original setting in the villa Lenbach. As many of the works of art were painted in ‘plein-air’, indirect natural light has been deliberately drawn into the upper level galleries to create the optimum environment for their display.

1198_fp477117_webview_large

A new entrance has been created adjacent to the restaurant, accessed via a new landscaped piazza to the east of the museum – this move reclaims the courtyard garden, turning it from a pedestrian thoroughfare into a tranquil space for visitors. The restaurant is open outside of the Museum’s opening hours and its seating continues outside, helping to enliven the surrounding streets and attracting new visitors into the galleries.

1198_fp477124_webview_large

The new social heart of the building is a dramatic top-lit atrium, with ticket and information desks, access to a new temporary exhibition space on the ground floor and a grand, cantilevered stair to the upper level galleries. Clearly articulating the old within the new, its impressive volume incorporates the ochre exterior wall of the original villa and is scaled to accommodate large-scale works of art. The Museum commissioned the artist Olafur Eliasson for a site specific work titled Wirbelwerk. During the day sunlight washes the white walls via a long, slender opening at roof level and horizontal louvres cast changing patterns of light and shade within the space.

1198_fp477125_webview_large

As well as repairing the fabric of the existing buildings, one of the main aims of the project has been to radically improve the museum’s environmental performance. A water-based heating and cooling system within the floors has been implemented – using significantly less energy than an air based heating, this represents an innovative step in a gallery context. Rainwater is also collected and recycled and lighting has been replaced and upgraded with low-energy systems.

1198_fp477132_webview_large

Lord Foster: “Our main challenge has been to maintain the same amount of exhibition area, within the museum’s footprint, while creating new circulation and visitor spaces. Given the way that the different parts of the museum had evolved, there was no such thing as a typical space – every corner is unique and required individual attention and different design decisions. This has been a fascinating process. Another important aspect of our design has been creating new opportunities for works of art to be exhibited outside the traditional confines of the gallery, such as in the atrium. This space develops the idea of the ‘urban room’– it is the museum’s public and social heart, and point of connection with the wider city.”

We thought this project as an opportunity to create a vision and a landmark for Walltopia and the city of Sofia. Through a contemporary imntellectual attitude and a precise architectural language we propose a poetic approach to the theme of sport activities and free time. According to the competition program we choose an artistic and sculptural-scenic solution that can give quality to the area, the park and the city. Reading the requests of the program and in relation with our idea we decided for the design of a single building volume containing all the function for the convenience of the organization of the functions themselves and also for economical reasons.

Cutting_edge_gianluca_milesi_01_fin_large

cutting edge gianluca milesi architecture

The building we propose is placed on the side on the east-west direction in order to be at the same time a filter and a connection between the city and the green area to be expected in the north side of the lot. Furthermore the shape and the orientation of the main volume is articulated according to two directions in considerations of the alignments of the property lot and in a way to use all the panoramic potentials of the area.

Cutting_edge_gianluca_milesi_02_fin_large

cutting edge gianluca milesi architecture

The formal idea/concept is directly related to the image of the mountains and the rocks and their cracks and cuts. In order to reach this result whit thought to a Corten perforated plate skin wrapping the whole building designing neat but not regular lines. The Corten perforated plate allows the passage of the light and the view to the exterior in every part of the building. Beside this, the skin is cracked by vertical and oblique cuts in particular points in order to have a perfect visual communication. The skin wraps the core building that is a glass structure sustained by steel pillars and trusses.

Cutting_edge_gianluca_milesi_04_fin_large

cutting edge gianluca milesi architecture

Regarding the organization of the function of the building we thought convenient to locate on the ground floor the activities that were able to established a connections between the plaza facing the city and the green area behind. For this reason we placed on the ground floor a double height entrance and distribution hall hosting the main vertical connections, the coffee shop, the climbing hall, that is developing itself till the top of the building and finally the restaurant, directly connected to the green area and the summing pool. The coffee shop, organized on two floors, is intended as a fulcrum between different function such as the climbing hall and fantopia and is easily reachable from the spa and the fitness space located on the first floor. On the second floor are located the multifunctional hall and part of the required office spaces that occupy the entire fourth floor. The mechanical rooms are located underground. The last floor of the building hosts the roof coffee shop from where is possible to access to a panoramic view terrace and at the same time to have a good view to the climbing hall from above. This visual communication is in any way maintained at all floors of the building. In the climbing hall are provided climbing walls and boulders according to the number and the needs of the climbers and this space is particularly open to the exterior through the cuts on the skin and though a big opening facing the plaza.

Cutting_edge_gianluca_milesi_05_fin_large

cutting edge gianluca milesi architecture

The park-green area is organized on a linear scheme perpendicular to the main facades of the building. Several boulders and even climbing walls are scattered in the park, the swimming pools are directly connected to the restaurant while the event stage area is in the north side. The green house, designed using the same language of the main building, a glass box wrapped by a Corten perforated plate, is located on the west side of the park, visually connected to the main building. All around the green area is articulated a cycling path. The parking area is on the extreme north, far away and secluded from the park and the main building.

Our poetic way to work and design wants to satisfy all the needs of a well working Activity Center conjugating at the same time architecture, aesthetic, physical needs, open air life style and leisure.

The building is located in the new extension of the Sauvenière industrial zone. A new production unit will be built for the Vrebos Group that manufactures and installs aluminum and PVC door and window frames, to enable increased fabrication of PVC frames.

01-ok_large

The structure will be built in phases: a 3,500 m² production zone first, then a 2,000 m² storage facility. It also contains an 800 m² administrative section with offices and a showroom, incorporated in an open corner of the building and totally glazed. It is structured and enhanced by long three-dimensional strips in the company’s colors, which also support an exterior balcony and provide solar protection for the curtain wall. These colors are echoed on other parts of production hall frontages. The building’s style, and the administrative part in particular, enhances the company’s image.

When designing small spaces the “keys to success” is to think in terms of multifunctional solutions. The designers’ biggest challenge is in fact to carve out well defined areas for each activity from a handful of square meters.

Web1_large

The second challenge in this kind of project is that most of the time small apartments designs have tight budget limits. But in this case simplicity is a guarantee of elegance. Choosing the style and the decoration the motto should be the Mies Van Der Rohe’s “Less is more”.

After 10 years of continuous use the first mixed bathroom in the faculty of architecture of Barcelona is still like the first day. Born through the organization of a competition among students of the school, it required the conversion of a residual space of the 5th floor of the new building of the ETSAB.

Etsab1_large

For us it is an honor that our debut is within the building of the faculty of architecture, were we have studied do much time. It is very funny to think about present and future great architects -the toilet is on the floor where are the classroom of projects, have been there for 10 years now.

Etsab2_large

Our first goal as a designer but also as future users of this space was the transformation of the residual space in a uniform space and functional suited to students of architecture. Clean, spacious and airy, with multiple locations may leave large items: sheets, layouts, tubes, etc.. The objective was basic cost for implementation. All materials furnish Rock and healthcare company not add charge. Without compromising the aesthetics and maintenance got a simple set, easy to maintain and with a certain attention to detail. The result was a draft budget lower than expected. Another challenge was to maintain privacy in such a small space, with few elements is achieved overlooking crossing place a mirror despite continuous from end to end daylight multiplying the space

CUBE TUBE in Jinhua - SAKO Architects

0
0

‘CUBE TUBE’ consists of an office building and a restaurant building in the new Economic Development Zone in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. As the entrance of the EDZ, there was a strong requirement for the buildings to act as the landmark in this area. Most buildings around this place are based on [Tei Kanmuri] style. To make a contrast, we wanted to design something as simple as two blocks. ‘CUBE TUBE’ came from this simple idea. One is 32 meters square office Building, named ‘CUBE’. And the other is 55 meters square restaurant building named ‘TUBE’. They are placed in a grid area with hundreds of trees.

C_t_19_large

‘CUBE’ is a central core typed office building with ninth floors. The client requested that the working areas should be individual; the building had to be airiness and had to have good natural lighting in the central part of the building. The first request is not difficult. However, the other two requests conflict with general forms. In order to achieve the client demand, we designed corridors, like a ‘cross’ cutting the central building to parts. The corridors connected to the terraces installed on each side, East, West, South and North. Therefore, we managed to let wind and light brought into the centre of the building.

C_t_04_large

There are three sizes of terraces. We used varies heights and widths to make them different. The terraces are placed randomly to make a complex and rich pattern in the ‘CUBE’.

C_t_05_large

Highly polished stainless steel that has been processed with a grinder covers the outside walls of ‘CUBE’. Transparent, grey and black colours of class are adopted for the ‘TUBE’. Randomly placed terraces lessen the effects of the floor slabs to articulate the facade, thereby emphasizing the simple forms of the Cube and the Tube. All of these factors make the two simple blocks become a landmark facility in this area.

C_t_07_large

A square module with 550mm a side is applied for furniture, fittings, the surface and the outdoor facilities. The number 550mm is induced from the half height of the handrail. This module connects everyone related and plays the role of a common language.
