Star Lane Phase 2 - Davis Landscape Architecture

0
0

The majority of the residential public realm within the site adopts the principals of Home Zone, with carriageway and footway being on the same level. This design is to encourage slower vehicular speeds and to give the pedestrian priority. With slower traffic speeds safe doorstep play becomes a real possibility. The drainage proposals for this site adopt the principals of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). The surface water from the carriageways and footways drain into swales at the edges of strategic roads. As well as functioning as a sustainable drainage solution these swales provide a valuable ecological resource and are to be planted accordingly. As a buffer zone between the proposed residential development and the existing wildlife zone (surrounding the lakes to the south) an ecological park is proposed. This will enable residents within the vicinity of this park to have an accessible public open space and possibilities to enjoy wildlife close up.

Milano Famagosta: Una Periferia diventata lentamente Centro. Ogni giorno.

The new House of Hungarian Music will be the only building standing alone inside the park of the new museum complex making it the major attraction after the Ludwig Museum of the city park.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

© +imgs Exterior View

The shape of our proposition for the House of Hungarian Music takes into consideration the new axis that goes from the 1956 Memorial Square to the Petofi Event Center that will recentralize the axis of the park to the same position as it was in 1813. The House ofHungarian Music will represent the new center of distribution through the park where the shape of the circle is used to redistribute the entire flux through the park. By creating a central circular junctionin the park, we will redistribute its internal circulation. The shape will facilitate the circulation from and to the new museum complex and to the existing services in the Liget Park.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

© +imgs Entrance View

Our proposal for the new House of Hungarian Music focuses on creating a landmark for the park whilst respecting its environment. In order to fulfill this, our proposition plans to conserve 95% of the existing trees selected by their health and age. The remaining 5% will be moved inside the non-constructible area near the Lakeside. The structure will be formed by a series of parallel blades orientated perpendicularly to the new axis in order to allow permeability towards the lake. These structural elements will allow the trees to easily grow in between them. The beams represented as blades will project themselves over the top of the smaller trees included in the site, whereas on the taller trees the blades will pass under them where the trunk will be the only part left apparent.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

© +imgs Aerial View

The structure of the New House of Hungarian Music is conceived resembling a pentagram with a 4/4 time signature with 5 staff lines and 4 intervening spaces in which the top and bottom lines will become a structural element of the building. The idea of giving a Rhythmical structure similar to a pentagram was chosen because the blank sheet that represents the composition of music reflects the trees and the notes will be represented by the exposition windows that may be moved to create different circulations in the exposition spaces.

Walking along the new axis towards the Ludwig Museum the House of the Hungarian Music will appear on the left through the treetops. The more we approach the entrance, the more the vertical blades will dilate on our perspective showing the entrance to the Pergola.

© +imgs Exhibition View

Once entered the external circle the visitors will find themselves under a covered space where the tree trunks will appear from under the structural beams of the Pergola. This space is positioned in the main axe between the new axis and the lake seaside. From here we are dispatched to the book gift shop as well at the bar and the Hall. This space is conceived as a filter community space where people can discuss the quality of the performance and expositions. It will host the arrival of the bus groups that can wait under the shade of the trees before entering the museum spaces

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

© +imgs Site Plan

The hall is an 18 m tall volume in which trees grow free from holes in the floor. The glazed roof will give the impression of being in an open sky area. This space will serve all the rest of the museum program spaces from two main distribution points. The permanent exhibition will host the HHM collection. It is conceived to be a flexible space in which the windows can be moved to sub-divide the exposition in different smaller rooms or larger areas. This space will also be provided with special ceilings that will create a sound experience path.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Conceptual Diagrams

From the Hall the visitors will have access to an escalator that will bring them to the temporary exhibition. The exposition is divided in macro and micro spaces positioned in between the treetops the bigger spaces will allow a certain flexibility depending on the current exhibition present at the time. The smaller rooms may host different acoustic experiences or installations. Walking through one closed element to another of the temporary exhibition, the visitor will be obliged to pass through glazed corridors which will let them appreciate a promenade in between the treetops.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Level 1 Plan

The Concert hall is conceived as a cocoon seen from the inside producing a continuous series of wood reflectors that propagate sound homogenously through the entire shoebox concert hall. The bottom of the hall will be treated with phonic absorbent to remove sound reverberation. The stage is positioned underground to allow a central entrance that communicates directly with the hall’s ground level.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Level 3 Plan

The sound dome will be positioned in front of the entrance of the concert hall. Its wooden structure will seem carved directly from the blades giving the impression of continuity between the exterior and the interior. The dome itself will be translucent letting the structure appear in the background. A projector will display video installations on its half spherical surface in order to emphasize experiences within oneself

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Basement Plan

The Lecture Hall situated in direct contact with the Hall may count up to 230 seats. Due to the different activities it may hold, the treatment of the walls is provided with a variable system, which allows to refract or absorb sound propagation.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Elevations

The learning area is positioned over the lecture hall. It will host not only children but also other visitors attracted by the listening center and multimedia spaces. This space will be situated in one of the tallest areas of the building and will be exposed to direct light at 360°. From here, the view will be unique leveling itself at the treetops.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Sections

The outdoor theatre will be positioned on the rooftop of the internal theatre. It will be accessible by the main hall for special events. Its height position will allow an exceptional view that will appear over the lake just behind the sea. The theatre will be surrounded by walls on three directions that will reduce the impact of the sound in the rest of the park during the outdoor concerts.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Environmental Diagrams

The offices are completely exposed towards the north-east in order to provide best illumination. They have separates access and may communicate with the Hall as well as the other elements of the program at all levels.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Ground Floor Plan

The underground hosts the parking as well all the storage and the machinery rooms. They have been placed on the site of demolished buildings to preserve the existing trees. The spaces will be placed in contact with all the vertical circulation to serve every element of the museum.

MenoMenoPiu Architects /- - + AA/ — House of Hungarian Music

Level 2 Plan

Exiting the Pergola towards the lake, the pavement will dissolve itself gradually in the park, creating benches as well as deck chairs to appreciate at best the view that will be in direct relation with the bar, In order for the visitors to end their day comfortably watching the sunset reflect on the lake while having a drink.

- Sustainability

The site itself provides a strong density of trees towards the south. This has been kept in consideration throughout the conceiving process. The blade esthetical approach will in any case affect the performance of the building. All separation between the inside and the outside will be conform to the 2020 almost 0 energy buildings attending to Hungarian regulations. The integration of the trees over the structure will allow the sunrays in the building during the colder seasons, meanwhile in the warmer seasons the leaves will act as a protection. The glazed roof of the hall as well climbs over the trees tops. These will guarantee a microclimateas the outer ones will filter sunlight. The blades as well are positioned in order to minimize direct sunlight into the building, especially in the exposition areas. Natural ventilation will be preferred for all the non-exposition areas. Large spaces provided on the rooftop will allow the gathering of rainwater. The concrete structure will guarantee terminal mass for the building.

- Experience

The circulation inside the museum is conceivedto make visitors understand the physical propagation of sound. Therefore every room is conceived with a different treatment of the wall surfaces in order to create an acoustic experience within the exposition.

- Anechoic Chamber

The visit will begin by entering an Anechoic Chamber in which the visitor willpurify their hearing from every type of noise allowing the visitor to experience silence and tranquility.

- Echo Chamber Experience

The next area will be treated with an echoing surface and hard floors. This will enable the visitors to have a particular listening experience where small sounds are amplified in relation to the shape of the building. The visitor will almost feel as though they are in a religious experience.

- Elliptical Chamber

This chamber uses the principle of the Elliptical sound effect. Here, there are two centers of construction, which concentrates on the two points of the propagation of sound. This will enable the visitorto hear from one side to the other side of the space without being heard by other people at the center of the exposition. This will bring the visitor back to the idea of rediscovering how sound moves through space. This will also lead to an illudical interaction between people watching the exposition. They will be able to start experimenting with sound and its different elements without strongly impacting the silence kept through this area of the exposition. The other visitors will remain undisturbed.

- 3D sound chamber

The 3-D sound chamber is conceived in order to let the visitor experience sounds realistically where they can visualize themselves in the scenes that the sounds make them think of.

- Sound Discovery

The remaining part of the exposition will be flexibly divided in cabins through the blade where it will be possible to apply every kind of acoustic experience the direction will decide to organize in the exposition. At this point the visitors may be assisted by a smart software guide that will allow them to interact with the museum during their visit. This will give them a unique and personal experience that they can share within social networks. These may be obtainable at the audio guide desk located in the hall. The last part of the exposition obliges the visitor to pass through a tunnel in which he flooded by sound experiences before re-exiting inside the tranquility of the hall.

- Rediscovery area

Once visitors have experienced the variety of sounding effects, the first part of the exposition aims for the mind to be ready to re discover sound. The second part of the exposition will therefore progressively reach the visitor with different acoustic sensations that will allow the visitor to re-appreciate the characteristics of sound.

The Doll House - BUROBILL

0
0

The parents of an Intern at Burobill architectural office asked Burobill to renovate an old house they inherited.

BUROBILL — The Doll House

So the play began…The house was cut up in two parts (staircase + rooms) and every room was designed differently like the rooms of a Doll House, including the curtains.

BUROBILL — The Doll House

The outside of the house was left the way it was but the windows needed to be renovated. A motive that vaguely refers to old glass windows in those kind of houses (‘50’s) was used in the windows as well as in the stairs.

MEMORY SEEDS - Tomas Ghisellini Architetti

Life is a breath. It is something that has to do with lightness and balance, desire for the infinite and consciousness of a non traversable limit. It is something strongly deep rooted within but frail, a shaky possession always on the brink of leaving. The new Memorial will be like a petrified garden of giant dandelions. This light, simple, poor and fascinating flower, traditionally associated to good chance and fortune babyish rituals in roughly every culture, will be used to stimulate in people’s minds a shivery sensation about the fragility of existence and the possibility to consider its destruction as a starting point to generate new life and awareness. A single blow is enough to completely destroy a dandelion. It cannot resist the force of wind or the hits of heavy raindrops. Its beauty and integrity are definitely at the mercy of fate, they are and they clearly appear to us like so delicate and precarious. But once you or nature have blown it away, once somebody or something has decided for destruction, the seeds starts freely floating in the air becoming first the messengers and then, at the end of the story, the real parents of new lives.

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — MEMORY SEEDS

In the same way, millions of fragile bodies have been destroyed in a few history seconds. And desperately trying to find an answer to the drama of our souls asking “why?”, there is maybe only one thought that can slightly relief us from pain: that beastly and abominably planned erasing action did not happen in vain. Just as the plumes of a blown dandelion, those names and faces have become the seeds of a new conscience for humanity, they have set a new level of moral and ethical sensibility, they have been flying through decades falling onto the ground of spirit and sprouting into a warning memory of that wretched and unforgettable past.

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — MEMORY SEEDS

Our proposal draws a garden of memory, a place for reflection where metal dandelions will raise from the stone as it happens for long-distance dispersed seeds colonizing ruins. The project does not think in terms of changing when not even overturn the existing, but reasons on adding something significant able to give the context an added value. So this is a kind of art installation, if art can be considered as a privileged medium to communicate, interact and reflect on themes. Big steel dandelions, softly moving once touched by wind, populate this space of thought; some are intact, some are quite undone, others completely torn apart. The missing seeds, with their hairy parachutes, have ideally flown away spreading and depositing memory and new life elsewhere.

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — MEMORY SEEDS

Everyone will be free to build a personal interpretation of this place. But one thing is for sure: memory of the past will reach people through a so to speak “positive attitude”. Not only a message of mourn and warning for all the generations to come, but an incitement to feed hope, that is commonly so unusual for a memorial, will be carried on.

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — MEMORY SEEDS

Winter Garden - Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Cesar Pelli, FAIA, Fred Clarke, FAIA

The largest public space at the World Financial Center, the Winter Garden was designed as a grand glass hall with a huge bay window facing the Hudson River. An integral element to the World Financial Center and Battery Park City, the Winter Garden was designed for the general public as well as for those working in the financial district. It is a grand public hall unlike any other space in New York. The Winter Garden includes 16 native American palms in a rectangular grove. The floor around them is paved in diagonal patterns of marble. Skyscraper tops are visible through the roof, and a panoramic view of the Hudson River appears through the grove.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Cesar Pelli, FAIA, Fred Clarke, FAIA — Winter Garden

Collateral damage from the attacks of September 11, 2001 destroyed the pedestrian bridge that functioned as the main entrance to the Winter Garden. As a result, a new entrance had to be entirely reconceived. The design for the new east entrance created a wall-sized expanse of very clear glass panels supported by the most minimal structure. By stripping away the original granite façade and opening views of the interior structure, the building’s luminous public space can be seen as a destination for all of downtown. This glassy screen has become the new front door into and through the World Financial Center, the Winter Garden and the riverfront.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Cesar Pelli, FAIA, Fred Clarke, FAIA — Winter Garden

In addition to the glass wall, several elements of the Winter Garden have been reconfigured. The original marble floor pattern extends into the new entry, and the original stone have new openings to allow for the easy movement of large numbers of people. Upon entering, visitors face a large semi-circular wall of backlit glass ribs that follow the curve of the grand stair, and guide movement to either side. This new interior wall is set significantly back from the entry to expand the lobby area. The retail storefronts on the outer curved wall have also been redone as all-glass walls. Stairs and elevators flanking the entry allow visitors to bypass the main space and go directly to the second floor. Upstairs, a 110-foot long balcony faces out through the open façade, creating an indoor viewing area for the World Trade Center site and future memorials and buildings.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Cesar Pelli, FAIA, Fred Clarke, FAIA — Winter Garden

The renovation received the 2002 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Project Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

The project aims to introduce in the buiding fabric an architectural presence with a strong identity figurative, able to make clear the new church. The parish is divided by a fence-threshold, which emphasizes its edges change in the sense of the sacred space that contains and whose architecture is obtained as for excavation by a volume of constant height. The different areas of the program liturgical and pastoral are unified in an organic design, gathered around the voids marked by long churchyard, by the leafy patio and by the court of Caritas. The morphological articulation of the new church that rises from the sacred enclosure wants to give architectural form to the sign of the Cross. On the front entrance the volume rises perpendicularly, while on the back, the structure shaped mantle outlines the apse, and internally houses the presbytery. The ceiling takes the shape of a cross, spilling inside the nave with a large volume suspended, diffuser of natural light. The cruciform volume enhances the architectural space, exalted in its sacredness also by the natural light coming through the large decorated window and by the the body of water located between the weekday chapel and sacristy. The bell tower is dug in the center of the main front, above the bronze portal of entry.

Tirana Campus - Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho

To describe the actual condition of the city of the students is not an easy task. Different layers seem to have been superimposed one upon the other without any long-term planning. It is the result of a 40 years process of heterogeneous urbanization : a chaotic and dysfunctional fabric. Along planed groups of residential buildings and collective buildings, illegal private constructions occupy more than 25% of the total surface of the site, and none of these structures seem to provide the conditions for a sustainable development.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

But if we are forced to admit that the wholes needs to be reshaped, it is also impossible to completely ignore the existing situation : it would imply a tabula rasa and a build up from scratch. It is without any form of romanticized view upon the territory and its “natural” aspect, nor with a sincere interest for the current buildings, that we do believe that proceeding in this manner would be a mistake. Rather than producing and autonomous object, a new city within the city, we propose a project able to manage the inherent complexity of the whole site by extending its logic in order to fulfill the new expectations of the most important campus of Albania. Rather than to submit a new masterplan, a new formal layer upon the previous ones, we would like to submit a long term process, open to the volatility of the urban structures. Realism is understood here as a means to accept the irreducible complex condition of the city. Realism as a detached statement.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

Our proposal consists in a three-phase project. These phases are described below.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

The first phase of our project will be dedicated to the renovation of the existing buildings. After a close look at these buildings, it appears that there is an urgent need to renovate them by readapting their internal organization according to their structural capacity. This renovation should then take into account that these structures are for most of them not able to support every expectation of a modern student residency. But a mentioned above, we did not want to simply ignore this existing condition by suggesting their demolition. Our proposition rather tries to absorb contemporary housing needs while transforming the existing buildings.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

We worked in two complementary directions : at a programmatic level and at a construction level, we decided to remodel the organization of living areas inside these buildings in order to avoid the strict dormitory function. By reducing the number of students per room, from 3 to 2 in some cases, by dividing buildings into collective apartments where 10 to 16 students could live together, sharing collective spaces, and by placing public facilities open to every student of the campus inside the buildings, we totally reversed their function and opened them to a wider use. At the construction level, we propose to extend every one of these buildings with a new and simple construction that con host modern technical facilities and fulfill European standards in terms of comfort and security. This should solve every complication visible in the existing buildings today.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

Similar to the way we propose to renovate the buildings, we also would lie to submit the idea of renovating the existing landscapes by reinforcing its limits. A first belt of trees will be planted on the periphery of the site.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

Possibly overlapping the period of the renovation, a second phase will be initiated bt the construction of three new buildings that will allow to largely expand the capacity of the actual campus. These buildings, designed as a series of large-scale elements, will reaffirm the presence of the campus in the city of Tirana. They have been designed in order to provide different typologies adapted to a large numbers of students. These buildings will also host the new large scale collective facilities such as sports courts, food courts, and a library.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

With the construction of these three new buildings, the landscape will be deeply transformed by the implementation of a meadow surrounded by a dense concentration of threes. This new landscape will allow the whole site to reclaim its centrality and to introduce nuances in the use of its residents. While the wooded area suggests intimacy and anonymity, the meadow is an invitation to gathering and collective expression.

Thomas Raynaud, Elias Guenoun, Uho — Tirana Campus

The third phase of our project will allow for the city of student to achieve its ambition of housing 10000 students with all the necessary requirements. By extending its actual used surface to its legal surface by recovering the land illegally occupied today, it will be possible to build ne constructions and to extend the new landscape into these reclaimed territories.

Urban Pattern - Maria Elena Bifulco, Lorenzo Carrano

Il concept

Maria Elena Bifulco, Lorenzo Carrano — Urban Pattern

Maria Elena Bifulco, Lorenzo Carrano — Urban Pattern

SOCIAL HOUSING RESIDENCE - PETITDIDIERPRIOUX

0
0

This new social housing residence comprising 92 apartments is located in the middle of an urban development zone (ZAC) within which no other works have yet begun. Intended to house former migrant workers, single-parent families and isolated individuals, the residence clearly plays an important social role. The challenge was to assist residents turn a new page in their lives and develop the identity of the future neighborhood. The success of this type of operation simultaneously lies in the appropriation of the setting by its inhabitants and its acceptance by the neighbors. The architects specifically worked on these two aspects: from the outside, the architecture moves away from the codes that generally define the image held by hostels (introversion, repeated alignments of windows, mineral façades) while inside, particular care is taken to organize the routes followed by the residents (from the common areas to the front doors of the apartments).

PETITDIDIERPRIOUX — SOCIAL HOUSING RESIDENCE

The building, laid out as a right angle, defines a vast south and west oriented garden. The residence is designed as an assembly of three small buildings, a solution that offers a pleasant neighborhood scale and allowed the lessor to organize its rehousing offer on the basis of affinities between former neighbors. To avoid any repetitive effect, a specific approach is proposed for each side of the building (north road, east road, interior of the block). The façade opens very generously to the north: the glazed envelope provides transparency between street and garden, placing emphasis on the animation created by the movements of the residents on the access decks. Vertical elements forming fins optimize the provision of natural light and simultaneously enliven the façade. The rhythmic continuity and the effect of slightly offset projecting fascias assure the link between the two façades giving onto the streets. On the streets side, each housing unit has two vertical windows, either grouped together or separated, that contribute to “disrupting” the way the building is read by favoring the perception of an aluminum block. On the garden side, windows are positioned together in pairs within a shared metal frame, emphasizing large horizontal lines and reducing the number of perceived openings. Two types of housing units are proposed: longitudinally on the street side (layout in parallel with the street) which mathematically reduces the number of housing units subject to nuisances, and in depth on the garden side, favoring a pleasant interaction with the heart of the site for the majority of tenants. These differences contribute to reducing the effect of repetition linked to the nature of the program and, as far as possible, provide each apartment with an individualized appearance. The external distributions linking the two parts of the building to the north as well as the large outdoor staircase have been designed to act as small vertical “squares” positioned between town and garden, providing residents with settings in which to chat with one another, rest or just watch the world go by.
