Small is big

Or at least it might be. Here’s an exceptional space which proves that 13 does not have to be unlucky, and 13m2 can accommodate everything a city maverick needs.

Szymon Hanczar — 13sqm

Work, studies, going out with friends, concerts, exhibitions, cinema or eating out. Life in a big city absorbs so much that many young people are redefining the term ‘housing’.

Szymon Hanczar — 13sqm

- For me, primarily it was a bedroom. Plus, let’s say, a storage space – says Szymon Hanczar, a designer of the 13m2 studio flat where he lived for several years. – I didn’t want a spacious apartment which would involve plenty of time to take care of. On the other hand – despite the small space – it was not my intention to give up comfort and functionality. So it was really a unique challenge.

Szymon Hanczar — 13sqm

The effect that was achieved is unique as well. Thanks to the proper arrangements it was possible to fit a small kitchenette, a bathroom, a bedroom on the mezzanine and even a hammock for lovers of having their heads in the clouds. Of course – as it’s a prime location for a city slicker – there is a bike space. Everything is maintained in bright colours which visually expands the space. To break the minimalism there is a ‘Young Poland’ style leather carpet placed on the floor.

Szymon Hanczar — 13sqm

All of this adds up to a welcoming, aesthetic and surprisingly functional space.

Casa HLM - Rafael Lorentz

The HLM House emerges from a client’s request to build a retreat on a natural area in the outskirts of the city of Santa Maria, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The idea was to provide a place where one coul find himself in deep contact with the landscape, near enough from the city so working was still possible. From the begining, the challenge found was how to build something that could rise in the landscape as if it had always belonged to the place. The image of a curved wall, sliding through the original topography, came as the reference point, creating a surrounding thick layer of white concrete, as elemental as possible. From there, internal spaces take shape, in two main rooms divided by a central core of technical instalations and service areas.

Rafael Lorentz — Casa HLM

The first room is the dormitory, where the open space receives a tube and is just interrupted by a minor curved wall that shapes the bathroom aside. The second room is the living one, where one can seat around the fire, meet friends around the table, cook a nice tradicional “parrilla” or just seat around and enjoy the beauty of the view from the valley below. Wide open windows allow the landscape to be a constant presence in everyday life, and all window can be opened to connect interior and exterior. The dormitory and the living room are linked through a linear porch, projected towards the hill. The structure of the house, as weel as walls, is all made in white concrete poured on the site. The choice was made respecting the site, who demanded a very strong and radical materiality. The interior received natural wood floor and ceiling. A helicoidal stair leads to the green roof. this one has a constant layer of 18cm of water below it. This provides the house a very eficient and sustainable climate system, avoiding the excessive insulation on summer and keeping the heat on winter. Up there one can reach a quiet place to find yourself alone and just enjoy the beautiful view at east, made magical by everyday sunrise.

POSTRIVORO - Bartoletti Cicognani

0
0

Liveboat from above

Taking his trident in both hands, Poseidon stirs the sea into a fury and lashes up rain and squall. Mast and sail are torn away, Odysseus is thrown overboard and buried under a wall of water. When he emerges gasping and sputtering, he somehow manages to clamber back aboard. A goddess, Leucothea, appears to him in the form of a bird. She counsels him to swim for it. “Take my veil, tie it around your waist as a charm against drowning. When you reach shore, be sure to throw it back into the sea.”– Homer, Odyssey, Chapter Five

plastique fantastique — LIVEBOAT - Chapter 5 by Plastique Fantastique

LIVEBOAT– Chapter 5 addresses the ongoing refugee tragedy in front of our borders and offers space for communication and discourses. After a long odyssey, an oversized lifeboat runs ashore on Tempelhof Airport. Inside the boat, multilingual extracts from Homer’s Odyssey as well as fragments of refugee experiences are intertwined to a sound carpet.

New Training Center Campus for Mae Tao Clinic - a.gor.a architects

The new training center is planned to be a campus of several building (classrooms & temporary dormitories) that will be grouped together on a piece of land not far from Mae Tao Clinic. Despite the lack of development, the land has many advantages in that it is close to the Mae Tao Clinic and the Back Pack Health Workers Team office, yet is set apart from other developments, assuring security and privacy.

a.gor.a architects — New Training Center Campus for Mae Tao Clinic

Mae Tao Clinic is a humanitarian organization based in the Thai town of Mae Sot a few kilometers from the Burmese border. Besides free medical treatment, providing shelters and dry food for over 3000 children, Mae Tao clinic also started an education program in health care, sanitation and disease control for Burmese migrants. This should help to develop a social fabric in the border region and inside Burma in the foreseeable future. Space at the Clinic has been completely taken up with the need to serve the ever-increasing volume of patients. Therefor Mae Tao Clinic had to find land to build a new facility to conduct their training programs.

a.gor.a architects — New Training Center Campus for Mae Tao Clinic

Adobe, as a natural and environmental friendly material, was used for both the classroom and office walls. To protect these walls from the impact of standing water, a 30cm raised concrete slab, as a base, had to be built first. The roof is a timber construction with composite roof tiles. The windows and doors, also made out of reused Timber, were later painted green & blue for the classroom and ochre for the office building. The materials used are locally available and well known for their users, which allows easy maintenance and results in low costs.

a.gor.a architects — New Training Center Campus for Mae Tao Clinic

Funded by APHEDA– Union Aid Abroad from Australia, the construction of the 2nd phase, which included two classrooms and an office building, began in September 2011, and was completed in July 2012. The construction of the second phase was conveniently placed in order to minimize the negative environmental impact and reduce the energy consumption of the buildings. The orientation of the buildings and the window locations allow the main wind direction to flow through the houses and cool down the inside of the buildings, without the additional use of air/con or fans. For the construction of the buildings, adobe bricks and second hand timber were chosen to ensure that most of the materials should be whether reused, recycled or given back to the ground without any further damage to the environment.

a.gor.a architects — New Training Center Campus for Mae Tao Clinic

Adobe bricks have been used in Thailand for many years. The values of using them to construct building walls are not only based on environmental and economic reasons, mud is also an easy material to work with and allows everybody in the community to participate in the construction process. Due to its composition and thickness, earthen walls are durable yet biodegradable. They provide sufficient thermal mass to the buildings to ensure excellent thermal performance and other beneficial attributes such as sound and fireproofing.

Observation Tower - Mirò Rivera Architects

Evoking the notion of split-second speed, the Observation Tower reflects the spirit of the Circuit of the Americas and serves to establish the complex as a world-class recreation and entertainment destination.

Mirò Rivera Architects — Observation Tower

Like Formula 1 racecars, the Tower’s form is directly influenced by its performance. The primary structure consists of a continuously-welded double- helix stair wrapped in a filigree-like diagrid that enhances the feeling of lightness and verticality that the Tower embodies. A roof of red steel tubes converges at the base of the Tower to form a “veil” that sweeps up and over the central elevator core, doubling as an outrigger column for lateral load resistance.

Mirò Rivera Architects — Observation Tower

A viewing deck at an elevation of 230 feet offers a sweeping panorama of the entire track, downtown Austin, and the nearby Hill Country. A portion of the floor is structural laminated glass, allowing more daring visitors to look straight down below their feet.

Ouwegemsesteenweg - VOLTarchitecten

0
0

The “Ouwegemsesteenweg” is a road that connects the small village of “Ouwegem” with the N60, with “Zingem” and with “Kruishoutem”. The road is a typical example of the Flemish ribbon development. On a residual plot along the “Ouwegemsesteenweg”, 14 social housing units are developed: a mix of family housing, housing for the elderly and disabled and 4 small apartments.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

Combined with carports and storage rooms, these units create one spatial entity overlooking the fields behind the plot. A monumental gate serves as the entrance to the courtyard. The courtyard itself is used to create a new passage to a typical Flemish cobblestone road that is situated behind the project site. The linking of the different units will incorporate the height difference of 2m that is present on the plot.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

The project as a whole is a hybrid form of the more traditional agricultural architecture: a series of different buildings, centered around a courtyard, with the complex only being accessible through a gate. This historical form of architecture contains a certain looseness and spontaneity in its design, which is used as an advantage and is also a defining characteristic in this project.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

The carports are situated next to the courtyard, serving both as entrance to the housing units and as a roofed terrace. The use of materials (ochre coloured masonry, brickwork in concrete blocks, wooden cladding and zinc gutters) will contribute to this casual atmosphere.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

The units are organised in a way that they offer a splendid view on the open landscape for the inhabitants, while at the same time allowing only limited view towards the surrounding parcels. All housing units are provided with either a garden or a large roof terrace, a private carport and storage room for bikes, all within the structure of the building.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

The project tries to find its own place within the ribbon development idea, but on a bigger scale: the entrance doors to the housing units are hidden from sight for anyone on the road or in the courtyard. It isn’t clear how many housing units are incorporated within the building project, nor can it be derived from the façades how big the individual housing units are. In a way, the project blocks part of the view towards the fields, but instead it has chosen to offer a framed perspective of the landscape and a passageway to the cobblestone road that lies behind the project site.

VOLTarchitecten — Ouwegemsesteenweg

The project may be an example of how the whole can be bigger than the sum of its parts. It may also be an example of the search for an answer to the unique parameters of a site, using its positive elements (landscape, tranquility, countryside) as well as its negative elements (ribbon development, the road and its traffic). It could be seen as a model in which a group of houses generates an image on a larger scale and at the same time embodies an explicit link with the landscape.

Spatial planning and new construction of an administration building with 700 workplaces, a restaurant, project rooms and workshops.

Liechti Graf Zumsteg — Verwaltungsgebäude / Administration Building, Zollikofen

The orthogonal constellation of buildings with different heights creates a meandering exterior space. The development is introduced by an eight-storey building with an urban square in front of it. Stairs lead from the entrance hall to a gallery on the mezzanine level, along which the project rooms are aligned. Double-storey lounges are situated in the central zones of the office floors. Their crosssection creates exciting visual relationships and contrasts with the flat, wide working areas.

The new volume is integrated in the context according to its urban principles: a soft and geometrically simple object detached from the existent buildings, which establishes new relationships, passages and views between buildings and landscape. Towards the congested Hans-Böckler-Straße, two walls restrain an embankment and protect the ground floor and the free areas around the residence. The enclosed volume that contains the upper floors is detached from the ground floor and it seems to fluctuate above the ground floor and the embankment: this layout creates a cantilever that screens out a path that leads to the main entrance and to the existent building’s accesses.

geza, Studio_cfk, KLA kiparlandschaftsarchitekten GmbH — AUG Housing

The ground floor constitutes the meeting place and it gathers all the communal functions. The areas destined to leisure activities are located eastwards, looking at the green and connected by a wide corridor. The offices are located close to the southern main entrance, while the technical rooms, store rooms and laundry are under the embankment. The single apartments of the upper floors are lined according to the east-west axis and can be reached by wide inhabitable corridors. The corridors constitute the extension of the single apartments and can be freely furnished with tables and chairs fostering the studends to study, to eat or to meet together. The living rooms and the kitchens are located in the northern and southern sides. The line of apartments is split by small living rooms that, together with the northern and southern facades, assure the natural lighting of the corridors. The apartments assure the accessibility for the disabled and are spread all over the upper floors to foster the integration between the inhabitants. The covering of the building is made of natural and artificial stone and is ruled by the high and narrow windows. Le southern glass facade is equipped with a protective device made of aluminum directable elements.

The open space layout is strictly linked with the existent vegetation of maples and white hornbeams that surrounds the area. The new vegetation connects the landscape with the clear shape of the new volume which is introduced by lined liquidambar that, thanks to their piramidal shape, create geometrical inflections to the site. In autumn, their foliage turns to violet-yellow color in contrast with the building facade. Eastwards, groups of fruit-trees generate visual relationships between the building and the open space. Their low height and the saturated coloration of their leaves assure a particular look to the site. New flowering trees are planted in the congested road creating a protective screen.

Neue Sternen Trotte / Wine-Press, Würenlingen - Liechti Graf Zumsteg

The form and materials are inspired by the image of village barns. The striking gable façade and wide overhanging canopies achieve a distinctive, yet familiar expression. On the entrance façade, formwork made of oiled fir is cut in a way to create star-shaped ornaments at the joints. In the room for sensors beneath the gable, the wine is the focus of attention. The room’s black shell recedes, while the white table provides a stage for the wine.

Bottega Garibaldi - Campanini Mariani Architettura

American Roadside Diner - Campanini Mariani Architettura
