The main issue of Ås is the separation between the student community and the resident. The city centre is empty, devoid of really attractive public functions and disconnected from the university located far to the west. Students who live in Ås reside mostly inside university buildings and their life and leisure is around the university itself.

The train station position is an important point of arrival and departure close to the city centre. The daily flow of commuters from the station through the centre, tangent to the project, and heading in the direction of the university a few kilometres away.

In this sense the project area develops a connection role between the flow of people arriving and departing, close to the railway and along the main cycle and pedestrian paths of the city.

The project aims to strengthen the existing slow connections producing a sort of connecting ring between the various urban areas. Through the project area are linked the station with residential areas and the university, leaving all existing public services in the center and within easy attainable.

To increase the connection between downtown and the university area are designed complementary functions to the existing public ones in order to generate a spot network. The areas of influence of each new function create a new urban punctual system, able to link in a linear system the urban fabric of the city. The new functions designed are located in strategic positions along the existing cycle path at a distance of no more than 5 minutes walk from each other.

In this way the spatial closeness of public services promotes the strength of relationships between individuals. The type of distance that counts for the establishment of social relationships is the functional distance that sometimes does not coincide with the physical one.

Social needs sought in the neighborhood are the perception of a community determined by the knowledge of its neighbors. The network of relationships that is created in the area leads to an experience of the city “on a human scale” where it is possible meet all of needs without necessarily leaving the own territory. The proximity and knowledge of the people leads to a greater sense of security and belonging to the territory.

The opportunity to meet the physical and social needs in the neighborhood favors the settlement and decreases the chances of removal from the inhabitants so that relationships can be cultivated and strengthened.
