Our team has decided to maintain the original principles of the traditional loft, as luxury apartment, spacious and bright with large windows and double height, housed in former industrial structures. But we wanted to give added value in terms of social and environmental consciousness choosing Beijing as location of our idea. The decision arose from an analysis of the serious situation on the air quality in the Chinese capital and, partly, also of the relative social inequality, becuase we wanted our loft also give a message of environmental responsibility and equality as well as an artistic vision of a crucial theme of contemporary living.

Our project go forth the definition of the word “loft”, and try to remember the meaning of its origin, the german LUFT : AIR. Not only space for inhabitants but also air quality for all. It would be a symbol of a global cultural change. In the collective imaginary, cooling towers are structures associated with industrial air pollution because of their large masses of steam, though they don’t constitute in fact the main channels of pollution. We chose two of these structures in the former industrial area of Fa-tou, where COAL, the main resources used for energy production in China, was storaged, worked and distributed.

The new loft could be part of an air filtering system, included between the structure of the tower and an inner membrane. Cooling tower could become a living organism where luxury dwelling units and public spaces can be different dimensions of a unique project. The new lofts will partecipate actively in life quality improvement, and nevertheless they can use the incredible position to give their owners the privilege of a view toward the entire city of Beijing as well as the pleasure of the view of the green courtyard.

Abandoned cooling tower can host a new fantastic life , if only we could see…. The inner membrane create an interspace toghether with the wall of the tower, in order to facilitate the air circulation. Loft finds place in the interspace taking advantage of the two different views, for bioclimatic functionality and aesthetical pleasure.
