THE SHUTER VISION The proposal offered delivers on all facets of the brief. It is a building that will not only celebrate the preceding 45 years that Shuter has traded, but also the future of Shuter into the next 45 years and beyond. This building generously offers and delivers consideration for all people. The elegance and implied appearance of the building touching the earth lightly, and real impact environmentally offered by the carbon neutral solution, in combination with unique structural and aesthetic quality, will project this building, and by association Shuter, into international prominence as both a landmark building and company.

DESIGN CONCEPT With a carbon neutral solution firmly in our sights, we embarked on a proposal with our inspiration taken from the banyan tree, set in Taiwanese culture, the spiritual and organic source of life; the tree of life. The organic form constituting the main structure of the proposal draws heavily from the structure of a banyan tree.

HEALTHY WORKPLACE The implied and effected strength of the structure juxtaposed to the lightness of the cladding introduces to both the immediate workforce and neighboring community a new concept and approach to housing a manufacturing process. Most manufacturing is normally associated with oppressive darkness, heaviness, and inhospitable internal and external space, low regard for the workers and less for the neighboring community. The translucency of the external skin allows for a voyeuristic connectivity with the public while simultaneously maintaining connectivity to the outside world for the workers within. Openness, lightness and greenery are all present and in balance providing a more desirable and arguably healthier work environment.

The place’s choice is determined by the urban vocation owners. A quiet street, almost no traffic, located in Raval neighborhood of San José of Elche.
The plot size is 7×10.50m, in a street width of 4 meters.

Tripartite and complex collaboration: Maite (the owner), and Javier and Ángel (authors of the project, and one of them is another owner). The first decision is to build the “sideway glance”: the facade is pierced with minimal windows necessary to comply with the habitability rules. These windows let to take a look along the street.

The living is inside the house and a big patio, with the same dimension than the width of the street, becomes the true soul of the building and the most important place, allowing sunlight bathes the interior.

Una villa la mare fabbricata alla fine degli anni ‘50 aveva bisogno di un recupero degli impianti e delle finiture, tanto per le aree esterne quanto per gli interni. Particolare cura è stata assegnata al recupero del pavimento originario in ceramica vietrese, per il quale si è provveduto alla realizzazione, su disegni e colori corrispondenti al preesistente, di piastrelle nuove inserite laddove mancavano o a sostituzione di quelle danneggiate.

Dental clinic of 130 sq.m.,realized according to the needs and desires of the owner, focusing on peadiatric dentistry. Its environment and interiors were designed to create a cosy and funny place for children, with some details that can be suitable to adults too. From the concept to the final work, our office followed every part of this project from architecture to interior design, passing through lighting design and other main steps that have to be developed in the realization of a dental clinic.

With its new footbridge, the City of Candiac, located in the suburbs of Montreal, wished to establish a strong landmark while connecting its northern and southern sectors previously separated by a major highway. As the symbolic entry of this growing city, the footbridge had to be harmoniously integrated into the landscape.

Designed for pedestrians as well as for cyclists, the footbridge draws its originality from an architectural concept that generates a sense of motion and energy, a kinetic and theatrical experience. The effect, for both highway and footbridge users, is created by the superposition of two reversed metal screens, located on either side of this link that spans the highway. The vertical slats provide protective screens that still offer a glimpse of the landscape. Finally, the use of ocher is a reminiscence of the grasses that grow abundantly in the territory.

The footbridge, accessible in both summer and winter, connects two green spaces, i.e. parks Handel and Cherbourg, located on each side of the highway. It offers an alternative for users that wish to reach the shores of the St. Lawrence River without having to take their car. The bridge is an major link of the green network of the Monteregian region.

The story of Falatow Jigiyaso orphanage begins in Bamako. In 1978, Fatoumata Goundourou found an orphan baby in the street and brought him home. From now on, her house will become a shelter for no less than 30 children of all ages. In 2010, the mayor of the city of Fresnes (south of Paris) – Jean-Jacques Bridey – was told by some of his citizens of Fatoumata’s story. Then he went to Mali to meet Fatoumata and decided to build a proper orphanage in Dialakoroba (50 km south of Bamako). The orphanage offers housings for children and staff, a small medical centre, administration offices, toilet and shower blocks, a kitchen and a dining hall. Classrooms and terraces are located on the first floor for children’s activities. The blocks are arranged around a central yard in the fashion of traditional Malian and West-African architecture.

On this project, located in the subsahelian area, we faced extreme weather conditions. Moreover, for practical, environmental and economic reasons, we choose not to use air conditioning units or even simple fans. For those reasons, the whole design of the orphanage is based on three principles that would guarantee a good comfort in the building. The first principle is the reduction of solar heat gain.To do so, an additional roof is placed above the blocks. Those roofs that go over the blocks’ edges protect the rooms from direct solar gain. Moreover, those extra roofs protect the terraces located on the first floor and used for children activities. The second principle was to improve the thermal mass of the walls. All the walls are made of “H”-shape concrete blocks. Then, the hollow centres of the blocks are filled with Banco: a recipe of mud and grain husks. Banco is easily found in Mali and is well-known for its strong thermal properties. Finally, gabion cladding is used on the most exposed façades. The last principle was about natural ventilation. On the scale of the whole orphanage, the layout of the blocks tends to improve air circulation. On a small scale, each block features vent grills in order to allow natural ventilation and passive cooling. During the warm season in April, we measured an indoor-outdoor temperature difference of more than 20°C. This result tends to prove the benefits of the specific design developed on this project.

As the orphanage is located outside the village of Dialakoroba and far from the services, we had no choice but to make it self-sufficient. Photovoltaic panels are placed on the roof to produce electricity. Groundwater is pumped in a 70m depth well. Another important aspect of the project is waste water management. As Mali faces great water issues, we believed it was particularly relevant to imagine a second life for the water used in the building. Therefore, waste water are collected and processed through an extensive treatment system. The first component of this system is a digester making possible the settlement of suspended solids. The second component is a biofilter where anaerobic bacteria are fixed on sand beds in order to purify the water. When depolluted water exits this device, it flows to an opened pond used for fish farming. The overflowing water – around 4 m3 a day – is then used for agriculture (especially market gardening) allowing several harvests a year instead of one. This system not only provides food for the orphanage but also provides education for the children in the fields of market gardening and fish farming. Finally the orphanage outdoes its primary function of giving a shelter to the children and takes a part in their education and fulfillment.

This project was marked with knowledge and know-how exchanges. This can be simply illustrates with two examples. The idea of using “H”-shape concrete blocks that is a very relevant compromise between a complete concrete masonry design and a complete mudbrick solution was given by a Malian engineer. The extensive wastewater treatment process design by our friend Gérard Violante, a French engineer, was implement for the first time in Mali and should find other applications elsewhere. As a conclusion, this whole adventure will be always remembered by our team not only because of the nature of the project but also thanks to the quality of the exchanges we experience with people. This first project will be also remembered for bringing our team together to create our architecture firm.

Il Comune di Massarosa, consapevole dell’enorme valore culturale e paesaggistico che il sito riveste per le sue peculiarità, è da tempo impegnato nell’opera di valorizzazione e riqualificazione dell’area archeologica di Massaciuccoli, ribattezzata efficacemente “Massaciuccoli Romana”. L’obiettivo primario è quello di implementarne e ottimizzarne le possibilità di fruizione attraverso un miglioramento dell’accessibilità fisica e culturale da parte della più vasta gamma di utenti. Per far questo, nel corso degli anni, attraverso la ricerca di Partner pubblici o privati di volta in volta diversi, in sinergia con la Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana e con la Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali, è stato intrapreso un percorso che si è articolato in una serie di interventi sui tre siti dell’area archeologica a partire dall’anno 2006 fino ad oggi L’area della villa romana dei Venulei, tradizionalmente identificata come “ Le Terme Romane”, rappresenta l’emergenza più nota storicamente e rilevante , sotto il profilo quantitativo e qualitativo dell’intero comparto archeologico di Massaciuccoli Romana. Il progetto di riqualificazione dell’intera area della Villa dei Venulei, il più vasto degli attuali tre siti archeologici di Massaciuccoli, si è articolato in due lotti di finanziamento. Il primo lotto, realizzato nel 2010 per un importo di circa € 153.000,0, ha interessato la sistemazione dell’ingresso e del percorso di accesso alla villa dei Venulei con la realizzazione della nuova piazzola di accoglienza dei visitatori , pavimentata e dotata di panchine e altri arredi , e la sistemazione del sentiero di accesso che si snoda tra gli uliveti.

Nel secondo lotto, completato nelle annualità 2012-2013, per un importo di circa € 172.000,00 nell’ambito Progetto ACCESSIT di cui al Programma Operativo Transfrontaliero Italia/Francia “Marittimo” , si è realizzato un ulteriore intervento di riqualificazione funzionale dell’area archeologica della Villa dei Venulei incentrato sul miglioramento dell’accessibilità, che ha visto realizzare sia interventi di tipo conservativo e infrastrutturale sia la riorganizzazione funzionale del percorso di visita della villa stessa con la realizzazione di un percorso attrezzato. In particolare, gli interventi sono stati finalizzati a consentire l’accesso e la fruizione delle strutture archeologiche ai visitatori in condizioni di sicurezza e di piena percezione delle strutture stesse ed in particolare hanno riguardato sinteticamente: il restauro delle murature e degli intonaci per le parti più degradate delle strutture archeologiche, la rimozione della vegetazione infestante, le opere edili propedeutiche all’installazione di postazioni attrezzate corredate di pannelli didascalici, la realizzazione di ringhiere di delimitazione dell’area e/o di alcuni ambienti, la realizzazione di un impianto di illuminazione non invasivo, ed il ripristino del sentiero di accesso, gravemente danneggiato a seguito di eventi meteorologici eccezionali che hanno colpito le nostre zone in questi anni. Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto “attrezzature”, si è trattato della fornitura e posa in opera di elementi atti a creare un percorso di visita guidato nell’ottica di una piena ed efficace comprensione delle strutture della Villa ed in particolare: la realizzazione di pannelli su leggio collocati lungo il percorso di visita, integrati con piazzole di sosta che, a seconda dei casi, prevedono pedane, sedute, parapetti, la realizzazione di pedane integrate con rampe per il superamento di dislivelli e la realizzazione di nuova grafica su supporti esistenti (Totem) quale segnaletica indicativa

“If you think about voids instead of working with the solid elements, the truth appears… the art of the structure is how and where to put the holes… strength but not weight.”*(A)

From some geometrical variations Urban Filigree responds to a series of basic notions, (a) the high redundancy of circulation on the proposed city which runs parallel to the river {vehicular (cars-boats) and pedestrian}, (b) the contemplative phenomenon consequent from water and floating structures and© an open plan space as a consequential of a geometrical system of grid patterns based on a certain number of members for the required programmatic area, and a tri-axial network based on repetition and deformation.

(a) Parallel circulations to the river are broken, Urban Filigree disrupts linearity; a perpendicular force disturbs and enables visual tension with its context, creating communal exterior spaces, green areas, circulation paths. “Our objective may not be at all how to structure, but how to structure circulations”

(b) A water landmark, responding to the natural-artificial conditions of the site, enabling human interaction adding complexity to a multifaceted site.

(c) Baron Haussmann carried out a renovation of public spaces; boulevards and squares were created with a strong linearity, connecting landmarks. Urban edge as a basic structure-geometry was created following a natural system, where programme and extended programme respond to a Fibonacci system, a nature based sequence {Each subsequent number in the Fibonacci sequence is the sum of the previous two (Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2)}. The voids/additions were alternated, decomposing the whole structure into external areas, circulation, and services.

In parallel to these general strategies, specific approaches where developed applying the same framework of grid/cell and the Fibonacci sequence. Interior partitions, programme distribution, external circulation, green areas, a underwater structural system which treats the surrounding water with lemna minor (feeds on organic waste and reduces contaminating organisms), fixed/ loose furniture and a lighting strategy, creating a coherent and consistent system of architecture and design.

Once this level, we create a zoning using craters which are able to generate different areas. These craters create escanarios intended to be abstract, capable of being used in many different ways.

Il progetto si spinge nel collegare i tracciati del verde pubblico con i tracciati necessari al corretto funzionamento della sede bancaria, senza mai dimenticarsi della privacy e delle diverse esigenze.

L’edificio nasce dal terreno, con forme lineari ma allo stesso tempo ricordano i profili delle colline circostanti. Molta cura è stata fatta all’utilizzo di materiali moderni ma non troppo impattivi, l’uso corretto del vetro e dell’acciaio corten. Al piano terra l’ingresso è ben identificato da due bussole nel centro del prospetto, divise solamente dall’area bancomat, accessibile anche ad orari di chiusura dei sportelli.

Nella hall di ingresso troviamo le casse, la sala attesa per la clientela e i sistemi di collegamento con il piano superiore.

Al piano superiore è presente una sala attesa da 200 persone, questa sala attesa può funzionare sia ad orari di apertura della sede bancaria sia indipendente tramite accessi carrai e pedonali indipendenti al piano primo.

L’edificio è stato progettato con criteri di sostenibilità , il tutto per diminuire i consumi energetici ed allo stesso tempo per aumentare il confort interno, sia nella parte operativa sia nella sala conferenze.

La progettazione sostenibile è stata sviluppata anche in base ai criteri dettati da Legambiente, che ha visionato ed approvato il progetto in quanto risponde perfettamente ai valori massimi di economicità di esercizio di tutta la struttura.

Per arrivare a valori di trasmittanze termiche molto bassi abbiamo sfruttato al meglio la caratteristica termica del terreno, andando a chiudere l’intero piano terra ad est con terrapieni ed utilizzando un tetto giardino praticabile al piano primo.

Il parco è collegato perfettamente sia con la sala conferenze sia con l’area operativa della banca.

I prospetti sono volutamente chiusi a nord per diminuire dispersioni ed aperti verso i prospetti ovest e sud per sfruttare il rapporto calorifico fornito dal sole.

Anche i minimi particolari sono stati studiati per rendere unica la sede bancaria, la BCC di Buccino si deve riconoscere nella società ma allo stesso tempo deve riuscir a dare “sicurezza” alla clientela, questa sicurezza è stata simbolizzata nei fascioni in acciaio corten; fascioni movimentati che danno profondità ed armonia a tutto il progetto.

Anche gli impianti di riscaldamento e raffrescamento sono stati pensati per rendere tutti gli ambienti interni confortevoli e silenziosi. L’impianto ipotizzato è un impianto VRV capace di regolare ogni singola stanza alla temperatura richiesta e capace di recuperare il calore in eccesso negli ambienti sovraffollati per riutilizzarla negli ambienti che hanno necessita e viceversa. L’intero impianto assicura un risparmio energetico del 30% rispetto ai classici impianti utilizzati nel terziario.

Grazie a pareti vetrate a bassa trasmittanza termica utilizzando vetri bassi emissivi e capaci di scurirsi automaticamente in base alla percentuale di luminosità esterna, l’edificio risulterà in “classe energetica A”≤ 30 kwh/mq anno. I due grandi archivi presenti al piano terra sono collegati sia con la sede operativa sia al giardino tramite una scala autoportante, il tutto per rendere perfettamente collegati il piano terra dal piano primo.

I pilastri interni alla struttura sono stati progettati in calcestruzzo a forma di croce, il tutto sia per rendere ancora una volta unica la BCC di Buccino ma anche per far aumentare le luci dei solai e rendere gli ambienti liberi dalla struttura e modificabili in base alle esigenze della sede bancaria.

Una sede bancaria deve aver la capacità di cambiare gli ambienti in modo veloce ed economico, per questo tutte le strutture interne saranno realizzate in cartongesso e parete attrezzate – vetrate.

Anche i materiali interni sono stati pensando riprendendo le materie presenti in natura, gres porcellanato con effetto cemento ed il richiamo di pareti e controsoffitti di colori derivati dalla natura come l’ acciaio corten.

Tutti gli ambianti interni saranno progettati per aver una acustica perfetta sia garantendo il livello di privacy sia andando ad eliminare fastidiosi echi e riverberi.

Il nostro progetto è stato sviluppato per colpire l’emozione delle persone in qualcosa di nuovo ma che riprenda dalle basi del passato, il tutto per dare coraggio e stabilità.
