"Huis van Droo" - Johan De Wachter Architects

Huis van Droo (lit. House of Droo) will be the heart of area Droo-South, with a new gymnasium, the neighbourhood lounge, a child daycare centre and para-medic services. In December 2011 the building was finished and on January 2nd 2012 put into operation. The festive opening by users and alderman was on March 30th.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

Master plan Droo-South area – Duiven municipality wants to develop Droo-South to be the centre of a neighbourhood transcending residential service area. JDWA worked together with Duiven municipality and Andries Geerse on the master plan for Droo-South. The aim is to provide housing here for both younger and older people who require care, so they can live amidst their family, neighbours and friends. The heart of the housing & service area must not become a large foreign body with a care label. The challenge is to realize a residential area that derives it’s appeal from the (natural) mix of residents, the presence of low threshold facilities and services for both young and old, comfortable homes and a relaxed atmosphere in the public space.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

‘Box-in-a-box’ programme – ”A sports hall is per definition a closed space, which does not add to the liveliness of the public space in the area. By wrapping the central sports hall with all the other public programmes the building becomes active towards all directions and can become the real lively centre in the neighbourhood.” says Johan de Wachter.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

Huis van Droo materialisation – The all-round oriented Huis van Droo is a transparent building, the true façade is the inner-façade of the sports hall. The wooden façade wraps the central hall and all the closed programme elements and is consequently sometimes an outside, sometimes an inside façade. This idea is illustrated with large glass ‘holes’ in the inner façade of the sports hall where the public interacts with this otherwise closed space. Through this materialization concept the building is always recognizable, though different from all sides. The interiors of the individual users, on the other hand are a very specific match to each public function. The resulting image of the building is a well defined timber (outside) and glass façade in combination with (inside) a variety of characteristic individual interiors matching each specific user.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

SUSTAINABILITY

Social community centre Huis van Droo (lit.House of Droo) is located in the heart of the master plan for Droo-South area in Duiven (The Netherlands) that envisions the renewal of this entire neighbourhood. JDWA, the design team of Huis van Droo, is also responsible for the preparation of this master plan, as well as the design of the communal garden – ‘Tuin van Droo’ – surrounding Huis van Droo and the connection to the adjacent nursing home. Incorporating these different scales in the design process, from small to large, made it possible to improve the quality of architecture and the public space AND to ensure an optimal integration of sustainability measures for the entire project.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

Interactive process
From the beginning of the draft master plan we have been extensively working together with the current residents of the neighbourhood, the new users (HMOs) and the future users of Huis van Droo. In interactive sessions, we outlined the layout for the renewal of Droo-South. This method was continued well into the building design phase of Huis van Droo as well as for the design of the Tuin van Droo.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

Shared use and dual use
To realise the versatile programme (housing, care housing, primary care, sports, childcare, community facilities) within the confines of the renewal statement, there was a real need to efficiently target and assign the available space. It was necessary to share both indoor and outdoor spaces. This way the plan could retain sufficient light and air and only then would the public space really remain available to play, meet and relax.

Johan De Wachter Architects — "Huis van Droo"

Droo-South: sustainable neighbourhood
The three architects responsible for the architecture in Droo-South have continually tuned their design, programme and building typology paying full attention to sustainability in all its aspects and scales. As for sustainability measures for Huis van Droo; JDWA in collaboration with various consultants made an extra effort. The building envelope (steel & timber frame construction) and technical measures (cold-heat storage, solar collectors, heat pumps, etc.) are perfectly matched. Due to our involvement with the master plan it was possible to improve the building development with technical systems that we could share with the other new buildings. Thus the whole system of cold – heat storage is shared with the adjacent nursing home, increasing the efficiency of the systems’ usage greatly.

“Kulturhus de Nieuwhof” - Johan De Wachter Architects

In September 2011, the renovation and expansion of Kulturhus The Nieuwhof in Westervoort started. With the transformation of the Nieuwhof to Kulturhus the area Westervoort South now has a representative cultural centre with a full array of services for all residents.

Johan De Wachter Architects — “Kulturhus de Nieuwhof”

Three seperate buildings transformed into one Kulturhus

the existing Nieuwhof was in a poor condition and a thorough ‘update’ was necessary, both in terms of technology and equipment as in terms of appearance, inside and out. Also, through years of gradual growth, the internal organization of the building was no longer optimal. The entrance, a “link” between the three components, lacked representativeness and appearance. “The building was built as a gymnasium, later a socio-cultural centre and a sports hall were added. The various buildings stood with their backs to each other. We re-united these parts and added a shared lobby.”Says Johan De Wachter.

Johan De Wachter Architects — “Kulturhus de Nieuwhof”

Kulturhus concept

Together with users the aspirations and values were formulated, that would form the basis of the new content and physical renewal of the Kulturhus. The users were involved in all phases and decisions of the design process. The Nieuwhof is for a wide audience. Both young and old, with or without disabilities, people from the neighbourhood and from across Westervoort are welcome here. Because of the pluriform nature of this organization the – originally Scandinavian – Kulturhus concept was chosen. All the different functions in the field of culture, sports, health care, information and advice, education, welfare and services come together in one place. All different users come together under one roof. All the users are jointly responsible for the management and organization of the Kulturhus.

Johan De Wachter Architects — “Kulturhus de Nieuwhof”

Representative building

The transformation of Nieuwhof to ‘Kulturhus The Nieuwhof’ was based on the qualities of the existing buildings. With a combination of “selective demolition” and intensive reuse the existing shell could remain almost intact and at the same time space was freed for a new intervention. The steel frame and roof were largely retained. On the South side there was space for expansion. The new floorplan of the Kulturhus simplifies the orientation within the building and makes clear connections between the different parts of the building, thus creating a logical unity. The inviting entrance & new lobby are representative for all users. On the outside, the building gets a canopy and wraparound deck. Both the existing and the new facade are painted white so as to blur the individual components, making the building recognizable as a whole. Due to the modifications to the facade every user’s space now has a beautiful outside area. The meeting area has been extended with a large sun terrace.

Brewinc Sheds - Johan De Wachter Architects

As part of the repurposing of the former Brewinc College into a housing & culture cluster the old practice rooms of this former trade school are transformed into 24 starter homes, with ample outdoor space and intergrated parking facilities. With this redevelopment in the centre of Doetinchem a unique combination of “Facilities for the city” and “relaxed living in the centre” is realised.

Johan De Wachter Architects — Brewinc Sheds

Masterplan former Brewinc College

The old Brewinc College is the oldest monument of postwar Doetinchem . The typical fifties school consists of some classrooms and some practice rooms with characteristic shed roofs . Through a combination of intensive reuse and demolition/construction this site can become a vibrant place for culture and urban living in Doetinchem city centre. Commissioned by the City of Doetinchem , Johan De Wachter Architects formulated the masterplan for the redevelopment of the entire Brewinc Location. Along with the future users, we drafted the program of requirements and the outline for the culture cluster in the former school . The reuse of the former practice rooms and the development of ” shed-houses” was an essential part of the urban plan for the Brewinc location. Each shed was transformed into a new starter home.

Johan De Wachter Architects — Brewinc Sheds

Sturdy loft apartments

Designed by Johan De Wachter Architects and realized by Koopmans – Wam & Vanduren the practice rooms of the former technical school were perfectly suited for the realization of unique starter homes with spacious private outdoor space. Despite the compact size of these homes (approx. 80 m² ) the light, air and the characteristic atmosphere under the shed roofs are unique living qualities . The spaciousness of the sheds remains optimal. The characteristic structure of the sheds with wite wall frames, the large glass doors and shed roofs continue to set the mood . The sheds are part of the new Brewinc residential court that is part of the route of the Simonsplein to Hamburgerbroek. The court completes the urban network of streets and squares.

Johan De Wachter Architects — Brewinc Sheds

The building structure of the Shed houses is not only iconic in the city, but also ensures a special living experience with an industrial touch. The relaxed open relationship with the outside of the house emphasizes the sturdy and somewhat informal atmosphere in the court . A parking garage for 72 cars is provided on ground level inside the building . The homes fold around the garage so preserving the unique living atmosphere at the court.

Masterplan for the development of 'Ørestad Syd' district - Estudio Lunar, Henrich + Artigues, Lieux-Dits SAS

$

Ørestad stretches about five kilometers from the centre of Copenhagen to the Kalvebod Fælled nature reserve. Ørestad Syd will become the most southern urban extension of it. The clear edge existing nowadays along city and nature wants to get dissolved in order to recreate a new gateway from urban to nature and vice versa. Byliv i Birkelunden is a wavy landscape of small hills introducing the open natural space in Ørestad under the quality of a very generous urban grove of birches. On the opposite side the main avenue starting from the metro station opens gradually towards the landscape as an urban balcony which offers the main activities and commercial spaces of the new neighborhood. At both sides of the clash between nature and urban, a new intensive neighborhood will grow on several towers with its minimum footprint, giving away the maximum of open space between the slopes and under the trees to host a real urban life. This green carpet is not only offering a soft landscape, through the use of the section is also sheltering citizens from the wind and applies different qualities and identities by the different uses of a ¨urban sport circuit¨ spread all over the new district.

Private House - Michele De Lucchi

Originally, the apartment followed the traditional schematic a central corridor in the middle that gave access to the adjacent rooms. It was completely renewed. The sequence of rooms was replaced by a unique large hall that separates the other rooms thanks to a curvilinear wall. Most of the furniture is custom-made with many prestigious design pieces carefully positioned in the big hall. The colours and materials were chosen to bring out the naturalness and warmth from the cold city environment.

Podere Navigliano - CICLOSTILE ARCHITETTURA

CICLOSTILE ARCHITETTURA — Podere Navigliano

CICLOSTILE ARCHITETTURA — Podere Navigliano

Photo by Fabio Mantovani. © Ciclostile Architettura

CICLOSTILE ARCHITETTURA — Podere Navigliano

Photo by Fabio Mantovani. © Ciclostile Architettura

The site for ‘White Cube, Mangwoo’ is located in the east side of Seoul in South Korea, overlooking a beautiful Mangwoo Mountain. The area has been designated as a redevelopment area for a long time but recently, development was cancelled on demand by residents.

ArchiWorkshop.kr — White Cube, Mangwoo

After the redevelopment of MangWoo district was cancelled, the non-Architecture based contractor started their business. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much concerns about aesthetic & living quality but economic perspective view within the projects. We, ArchiWorkshop.kr, was first architecture firm to build multi-family housing in this area.

ArchiWorkshop.kr — White Cube, Mangwoo

White Cube building has 4 stories with total net area of 200m2. The building consists 120m2 of small site area. The geometry of the building is white cubic shape. The color of ground floor and top floor are dark grey in order to accentuate the white geometry of the white cube. The neighbor buildings juxtaposed very closely and windows could not be opened properly during days and nights. In order to solve the problems, a white wall was erected. The sun light from the top reflected to the interior space, which then brightened the inner space. We called this space ‘sunlight-balcony’. The four-season could be experienced from inside the house.

Year of completion: 2014.10

Glamping Architecture by ArchiWorkshop.kr(ArchiGlam) offers a unique camping experience. Two types of Glamping units with contemporary design positioned in the middle of gentle Korean nature. From the Glamping site, you have a view of the valley, miles of forest and the stream.

ArchiWorkshop.kr — Stacking Doughnut and Modular Flow

Concept:
Why not create a Glamping that gives people a chance to experience nature closer, while also providing a uniquely designed architecture experience? These questions led to the creation of Glamping Architecture in Korea – a place where nature, ecological values, comfort and modern design are combined for an exciting adventure. We developed two types of Glamping units.
Stacking Doughnut unit is inspired from pebble stones. And Modular Flow unit is designed for extendable structure by juxtaposing modular floor panels.
These ideas behind stacking Doughnut unit and modular flow unit are to offer high-standard accommodation in various places. We named them sea, dessert, creek, mountain, cave, forest, river and city.

Materials:
Glamping unit uses quality membrane which has characters to UV protection, water-proof, fire resistant. Double layered skins provide better resistance against extreme Korean 4 season weather condition.
For the complex geometry of the outer skin, computer animated surface plans are plotted with 2D cutters and welded with a high frequency technique, which gives absolute water tightness. The shape and the position of the structures are carefully considered to give aesthetic emergence during both day and night time.

Interior:
Each Glamping unit has toilet booth with art wall finish, which is painted by young Korean artist. The furniture is also designed by ArchiWorkshop.kr which suits well in the limited inner area. The folding furniture becomes sitting sofa during the day and sleeping bed at night.

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — OMEGA

Tomas Ghisellini Architetti — OMEGA

The final work comes from natural and urban characteristics which are the formal matrix. The hard and rough stone of the volumes conform the landscape of the farming at high altitude and sometimes it comes to light an unexpected volume. Pure volumes mark discritily the landscape.
